Mangaluru: No surveillance at Panambur beach, a major tourist spot

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 24: Panambur happens to be an important beach in Karnataka. Currently, the issue of maintaining the beach is in the court. The contract of an organization which managed the beach for 12 years came to an end recently. At the same time, contract was renewed for both the beaches at Tannirbavi two years back, but official order has not yet been issued.

Tourists coming to Dakshina Kannada district from other parts of the country and abroad mostly visit these beaches. It is very much necessary to provide facilities to the visitors, maintaining the beach, and looking after the safety of visitors. The tourism sector, about which lot of deliberation takes places, does not seem to have improved its functioning during the last several years.

About a decade back, tourism had not grown like it is now. People did not visit the beaches much and maintenance was not extremely necessary. But with the increase in the number of tourists, many whose behaviour leaves much to be desired also visit the beaches and unless there is proper supervision, the spots may earn a bad reputation for themselves.

Panambur beach development project which maintained Panambur beach has stopped operations some days back. But because many people come to the beach, life guards are on duty but there is no one to maintain the beach. Head of the organisation, Yathish Baikampady, says that they were given the tender for ten years. It was to be renewed for every five years and cancellation of contract can be done only if the service is bad. He said that 380 people were saved from drowning, and that even though they had managed the beach well, their contract was ended at the end of 12 years.

Both the beaches at Tannirbavi were maintained by Yojaka organization. Their period ended two years back after which tender was floated again. Yathish's organisation won the tender but official order was not issued. Now Yojaka has approached the deputy commissioner's court. As per interim order, Yojaka has to maintain the beach till the next order.

Through an order the deputy commissioner has formed Panambur Beach Management Committee headed by city corporation joint commissioner to keep an eye on Panambur beach till the next contactor takes over. Assistant director of tourism, Somashekkhar, says that tender could have been extended if the beaches were maintained at international level. He remarked that beach maintenance was not to the expected level. He says that compared to beaches in Udupi district, it is not enough, duly adding that fresh tenders will be called for both Panambur and Tannirbavi beaches.

Yes, I agree with assistant director of tourism to some extent. Beaches of panambur and Tannirbavi are not Maintained upto international level. The change rooms where extremely toiled up and pathetic condition. No benches where present anywhere in panambur beach. Many tourists coming from other parts of Karnataka and country keeps complaining about that they collect money at entrance but infrastructure not good.
Hope some committee will get functional soon and infrastructure be improved of panambur and Tannirbavi.

Better leave the beaches to its natural condition instead of commercialising. All that these contractors do is, in the name of protection, bring in restrictions to visitors and encourage parties involved in speed boats, camel ride, food stalls etc. and get commission from them..

These beaches were very nice to visit earlier. May be some parking spaces are required to be created and controlled. But no other restrictions and no commercial ideas plese.

My question to Tourism Director, who said Beach has not been maintained at International standards like Udupi Beaches. What has he done to get started a beach resort which has been constructed at the beach by spending not less than a crore by the promoter and has lost the money. It's easier to blame someone for not doing your work hanging on to archaic laws and do deny permission to any sort of activities. Businesses flourish when they make some profits, nobody wants to lose money for ever. Projects have to be economically viable.
Since last 20 years many adventure activities were conducted on the beach, kuloor riverfront none continued after a year or two siting unviable.
We may see a big crowd on a Sunday or Holiday, and may project big collections! what about weekdays and rainy season?
First develop a business friendly attitude so that tourists visit the place.
It's not that this country has no money. Country has money and nearly two crore Indians travel abroad as tourists, yes we don't allow the entrepreneurs to provide facilities for which my countrymen travel abroad.

Promote coastal cuisine at beach with good decor..Start water sports.Create employment through tourism.Put some stalls or joints for common people, Let people drink in open .Install garbage bin in every 100 meters.Grow more trees near the beach side like the goa beach.Let the people enjoy to the fullest.

They should have a watch tower which is missing in DK. The lifeguards or monitors are there who warn beach goers at Panambur beach but no one listens to them. In Goa at all the beaches which has many tourists on a daily basis have strict lifeguards.
