Domestic help held in Gurugram for stealing jewellery worth Rs 8 Lac

Gurugram, Oct 23 (IANS): A 20-year-old woman has been arrested for stealing jewellery worth Rs 8 lakh and electronic items from a flat located in Sector 43, Gurugram.

The accused used to work as a domestic help in the flat where the theft took place, the police said on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Bharti Mandal, a resident of West Bengal.

One set of diamond bangles, one pair of diamond earrings, one diamond ring and one set of JBL speaker have been recovered from Mandal's rented accomodation.

The theft was reported at the Sushant Lok police station in March 2020, the police said.

In his complaint, Jai Pal Singh, a resident of Rainbow Apartment in Sector 43, said that he had hired Mandal for domestic work.

On March 27, his daughter-in-law found that some ornaments which were kept in the dressing table were missing, following which she informed Singh about the matter, said sub-inspector Harish, the investigation officer of the case.

During investigation, the police team checked various CCTV cameras installed in the vicinity of the house. It was found that Mandal had left the complainant's house on the pretext of some emergency in her native place on March 13.

Based on some inputs, Mandal was apprehended from her rented house in the Saraswati Kunj area in Gurugram, the IO said.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to committing theft in her employer's house.

She told the police that due to her poor financial condition, she became greedy and committed theft at her employer's house, the officer added.
