Mangaluru: NMPT retired engineer Nagesh Marol leaves for heavenly abode

Mangaluru, Sep 26: Nagesh Marol, retired superintending engineer (mechanical), New Mangalore Port Trust, aged 91 years, passed away on September 25, 2020 at his residence in Mangalore due to natural causes, after a prolonged illness.

NageshMarol completed his Engineering from Anantpur, then joined the Public Works Department (PWD) in 1954 and was involved with the construction of roads and bridges in the South Canara and Mercara divisions.

In 1962 he was deputed to the Mangalore Harbour Project, subsequently absorbed by the Central Government. He was involved in the construction of the port from the very first spade of earth moved. The main dredging of the port was carried out by a Dutch consortium under his leadership.

He also completed a PG diploma in Harbour Engineering from IIT Bombay. He piloted the very first ship to arrive at Mangalore Port in the year 1975. Following a short stint as the acting chairman of the New Mangalore Port Trust, Marol retired as the head of the Mechanical division.

Professionally and personally, Marol was known for his astute judgement, upright decisions, staunch commitment, decisive leadership and unflinching honesty. He was the go-to person for anyone in need, and he also generated employment for the people of the region.

A well known personality in the region, his name 'Nagesh Marol' was synonymous with the New Mangalore Port Trust.

He is survived by his wife, three children, and four grand-children.
