New Delhi, Sep 23: Union minister of state for railways and BJP leader Suresh Angadi has passed away on Wednesday, September 23 due to coronavirus infection.

Earlier on September 11, Angadi had stated that he had tested positive for coronavirus infection and was admitted at the AIIMS Trauma Centre in New Delhi.

The 65-year-old member of Lok Sabha from Belagavi constituency in Karnataka was consecutively elected four times in 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019.

As per sources, Angadi was placed on a ventilator after his condition turned critical. The doctors who were treating the minister stated that he was going to be discharged from the hospital within two days. Unfortunately, Angadi passed away on Wednesday evening without responding to treatment.

Mourning his demise, several politicians including Prime Minister offered their condolences to the late minister's family.

"Shri Suresh Angadi was an exceptional Karyakarta, who worked hard to make the Party strong in Karnataka. He was a dedicated MP and effective Minister, admired across the spectrum. His demise is saddening. My thoughts are with his family and friends in this sad hour. Om Shanti," PM Modi tweeted.

Calling him an amiable leader, President Kovind expressed his condolences on Angadi's death. "Shocked to know the passing away of Shri Suresh Angadi, Union Minister of State of Railways. An amiable leader Shri Angadi worked tirelessly for the people of his constituency, Belagavi and Karnataka. With his indomitable spirit, he carried out public service with humility and perseverance. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and the loved ones," President Kovind said.

Railway minister Piyush Goyal also expressed his grief on the minister's death and referred Angadi as his 'brother'. "Deeply anguished at the unfortunate demise of Suresh Angadi ji. He was like my brother. Words fall short to describe his commitment & dedication towards the people. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends in this hour of need. Om Shanti," Goyal tweeted.
