Goa CM pats cops for quick arrest of trio involved in jeweller's murder

Panaji, Sep 3 (IANS): Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday congratulated the state police for arresting three persons accused of murdering a 41-year-old jeweller in broad daylight in South Goa's Margao town on Wednesday.

"I congratulate DGP Mukesh Kumar Meena for arresting three culprits involved in the murder within 24 hours of the incident. Goa Police will further work towards lowering the state's crime rate. I also offer my condolences to the family of Swapnil Walke," Sawant said in a video message.

Walke, a jewellery store owner, was stabbed while resisting an armed robbery attempt in broad daylight by three persons. The assault was captured on a mobile camera by a neighbour and the video subsequently went viral on social media.

Two persons allegedly involved in the assault, Omkar Patil and Edson Gonsalves, were arrested by the state police and the third accused, Mustafa Shaikh, surrendered on Thursday before the Margao town police.

The brutal murder and the shocking video footage triggered shockwaves through the South Goa town, with the Opposition accusing the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant-led administration of being slack in checking crime.
