Madikeri: Talakaveri landslide - Bereaved family members engage in feud for funds

Daijiworld Media Network - Madikeri (SP)

Madikeri, Aug 17: Due to the landslide at Brahmagiri hill, the entire family of Narayan Achar, chief priest at Talakaveri temple, was decimated last week. The government has since disbursed compensation to the family. But now, the family members, instead of grieving, have begun to fight over the money. The family of Narayan Achar is now witnessing skirmish over the money.

Priest Narayan Achar, his wife, brother Ananda Teertha Swamiji and two assistant priests had died in the tragedy. Now the fight over the compensation has begun between two daughters of Narayan Achar and his elder sister Susheela.

The state government had disbursed cheques amounting to Rs 2.5 lac each to the two daughters of Narayan Achar. As Achar's brother Ananda Teertha had also died, compensation was also declared for him. The cheque of Rs 5 lac was handed over to Ananda Teertha's elder sister, Susheela, as he was a bachelor.

Achar's two daughters have now been insisting that their parents had looked after Ananda Teertha and hence they are eligible for the money. They are angry at the money having been given to Susheela.

Speaking at Bagamandala after handing over cheques, minister Somanna had clarified that the cheque was being given to the closest blood relation in respect of Ananda Teertha, who was a bachelor, as per Hindu law. Virajpet MLA K G Bopaiah had supported this notion.

Madikeri tahsildar Mahesh said that the family members have been asked to sort out the issue between themselves. He hoped that the problem would be solved by Monday evening.

First of all they have lost both their parents, acres of land, money, etc. And it’s their family issue. I don’t think this issue should have been put up by the media. And division of compensation is among them, not to be interfered by others or put up on this website. Show some respect to the family and let them decide. RIP to the souls and condolences to the family.

Very Shameless family they are more greedy of the money then the bodies of their parents, they have come from abroad just to claim the money the govt. will give and go back to the country where they have made their home , they have shown a wrong signal to the people, they should have waited till the mother body is found and then claim the money with , even the tickets for their flights to India must have been born by the govt. The govt. should not give it to them, rather give to the needly this will be a lesson to them

You should not make such comments if you do not know the real story, media always likes to sensationalize news so that their TRP's go high, the daughters are already suffering due to the losses of both their parents, they are both financially well settled in life and are not fighting for the money as indicated in the report.

It’s unfortunate that dirty linen is being washed in public. This could have been avoided given the tragedy of loosing your loved ones An. no money can bring them back to life.

As per law, the first heirs are wife, mother, and children. If any of the above are not there, second line of heirs are father, brothers and sisters. The govt has given the compensation rightly. However, since Aachar's wife also died, the daughters should have been given additional 2.5 lakhs each, since Rs 5 lakh compensation is for each victim. Why it is not done, I do not know. In a similar case, in Maharasthra, a woman lost 5 members of the family, and she was given Rs 25 lakhs compensation, being 5 lakhs each per victim.

Yes absolutely. In fact this compensation is still awaited among the people who were displaced and affected by the disasters of 2 year.. how was the govt so prompt in giving compensation to these people and not to so many who really need the money. Like this money is going to be a comfort for losing the family . It would definitely be a comfort in many ways than one for those who are in fire straits.
