Bengaluru: Only one Common Entrance Test for all professional courses?

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Aug 15: The state government is seriously mulling of introducing one Common Entrance Test (CET) and centralized counselling system for the benefit of all students joining professional courses.

At present, the government is conducting CET and private entities are holding COMED-K and several other entrance exams for professional courses, which increases pressure on the students. So the government is thinking of introducing only one CET for all professional courses as per instructions from the Supreme Court. This information was shared by a senior officer of education department.

Holding separate entrance test for seat selection in professional courses is against the verdict of the court as well as the rules of Karnataka professional educational institutions. Hence, the entrance test supervisory committee has written a letter to the state government asking it to direct all universities and private professional education organizations to hold only one CET.

Based on the recommendation of the entrance test supervisory committee, the subordinate secretary of Higher Education Department (technical education) has sent a directive to all private professional educational institutions to hold one CET and centralised counselling for all professional courses. In his order, the subordinate secretary has asked private educational institutions to submit their statement or opinion in this regard, in writing, to the president of entrance test supervisory committee, which is under Karnataka examinations authority.

Keep one test for all professional courses and the counselling must be optional.

Its a good idea to have one exam. In this case, Students from the City have an advantage over rural students. There are no good coaching centers in rural areas . In addition there over emphasis on entrance exams instead of focusing on school grades. One needs to find a middle path , where every bright student gets equal opportunity.

I feel average students, who are not confident better not to go for Professional Courses like MBBS. For professional courses unless you have passion to study you should not go for that because you deprive another student to achieve his/her dreams. i had seen number of Doctors even though they have degrees not able to deliver the goods.

Problem is that Comed K has a much lower standard than CET to enable students to get into private colleges. Don’t know how they are going to address that issue

Some years back, one girl in Mumbai with 93% in PCB, appeared for MBBS entrance test in the five following institutions separately.
    1. St. John Medical College, Bangalore------Test Centre St. Xaviers College
    2. Christian Medical College, Vellore--------Test Centre Wilson College
    3. Armed forces medical college, Pune------Test entre Navy Nagar, Colaba
    4. Maharastra state Govt MBBS entrance--Test Centre Mumbai
    5. Central Govt 15% state quota--------------Test Centre Mumbai
Since, she is a general category candidate, she could not secure a seat in any one Medical college.
Though her father wanted her to go to Manipal, by paying capitation fee, she never agreed because, she knew her daddy had earned the money by his sweat and blood. However. she did M.Sc (Microbiology) and went to Canada, where she is now earning Rs 8 lakhs per month.

I wrote this because, if she had only one common entrance test, there was no necessity to give exam in 5 places.

Good for the woman. Money is not everything for some. I know someone who worked 2-3 years just to study for Medical entrance and got into MBBS via Govt quota, doesnt earn much now, is in India, but is happy that he is helping people. Different perspectives.

Many exams causing student pressure ? This is incorrect. Having multiple options for entry decreases student pressure because, if a student fails to excel in one, he/she can do better in the other, and improve prospects. If many students compete at a time in a single exam, with exams held only once a year, it is clearly against the interest of the students. A student has to pay a heavy price if he/she cannot answer the exam, or fails to deliver in the test.
