India wants reciprocal trade with other countries: Goyal

New Delhi, Aug 10 (IANS): Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday asserted that Indian products deserve fair access to other countries before these countries can freely access the Indian market.

"India wants reciprocal trade with other countries," he stressed.

In his address at the inaugural 'India Virtual FMCG Supply Chain' event organized by Ficci, Goyal said: "Countries should, in a phased manner, look at sourcing from India, developing their products in India and then encash the large business opportunity that 1.3 billion Indian people offer."

According to him, it is time that the Indian industry stood up as one to ensure that it gets a level playing field.

"Our government will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with industries in their efforts to become more competitive and engage with the world on equal and fair terms. We are moving towards balanced trade," he said.

Urging the Indian industry to support and work together towards the aim of a prosperous India in the long run, Goyal said: "We shall ensure that any unfair treatment to Indian industries will be taken up at the highest level."

He further added that green shoots have become visible in the economy and exports have shown a healthy turnaround.

"Our balance of payments is going to be very strong this year. We need to ensure that India brings back the economic activity very quickly," he stressed.

Highlighting the importance of India in the global supply chain, Goyal said that the country can be a part of global supply chains, provide work opportunities to millions of people and enable them to become a part of the growing engagement with the world.

May I correct both of you. India does maintain the standard, but only for products manufactured for EXPORT. A proof is, that a mixie purchased outside, Made in India, lasts for 10 years while one purchased in India doesn'nt function beyond 5 years. However, products imported from China, always of uniform quality. Have you guys thought over this ? We Indians are no less stupid. We'll go for Chinese items in the bargain.

I'll give you one example - there are trade dhows happening globally where each nation puts up a pavilion. Trust me, except for a few items representing their nation, rest all items are Chinese. Why ?? Because they come cheap.

We are such a huge nation, when we will vow to buy 'Only Indian' though it comes bit expensive ??

    Jai Hind.

OK... Reciprocal trade with other countries. Meaning, you give so much and you get as much in return.

Fine - please tell us :

What reciprocal trade is Indian doing with China ? When a matter of shutting off trade with China over LAC conflict emerged, it was learnt that a 3/4th goods we imported from China, only 1/4 from other part of the world. In that sense, what did India export to China ??

    We want the reality sir...

That's exactly how Nehru steered a newly independent India. India became self-reliant in manufacturing all sorts of goods and providing all sorts of services.

But, to export manufactured goods, the quality must be the best in the world. That requires a lot of effort. If Japan, Korea and China can do that, India too can do it.

But Indians want to spend their time in mocking and taunting others. Instead if Indians become a little research-oriented like the Chinese, India can have some hope.

But mocking and taunting must be replaced by real education and research.
