Assam Police chief tests Covid-19 positive


Guwahati, Aug 10 (IANS): Assam's Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday and has gone in for home isolation, officials said.

According to a senior Assam Police official, health workers have begun tracing the people who have come in contact with Mahanta. Despite many attempts, Mahanta himself was not reachable.

"Since March, around 30 people directly and indirectly associated with the Assam Police Headquarters have tested positive. The infected include senior officials like the Inspector General of Police, Law and Order, and the Deputy Inspector General, Administration," said the official, who did not want to be named.

A total of 2,259 Assam Police personnel have tested positive for the Covid-19, but 1,734 have already recovered. However, six personnel succumbed to the disease.

Assam, till Monday afternoon, reported a total of 58,837 coronavirus cases, with 16,364 active cases. According to Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, 145 people have died due to Covid-19 in the state so far.
