Udupi: National Handloom Day celebrated at various weavers societies

Udupi, Aug 8: National Handloom Day which is observed to commemorate the Swaraj Movement started on August 7 in 1905 was celebrated at various weavers societies of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.

Udupi, Shivalli and Brahmavar weavers societies joined together in honouring two senior-most weavers at Udupi weavers coop society.

Somappa Jathanna aged 85 years and Sanjeeva Shettigar aged 83 years both of who are still weaving were honoured along with Krishna Shettigar of Brahmavara in the presence of Udupi SCDCC bank manager Sunil Kumar, presidents and managing directors, weavers and staff of the three societies.

Talipady Weavers Co-op society celebrated the day by honouring senior weavers Dasappa Shettigar and Lakshmi Shettigar and later, weavers and their families enjoyed the day with fun games and talent shows. All the members and office-bearers of the society participated in the programme.

Haleyangady Weavers Co-op Society observed the day with the participation of office-bearers and weavers of the society.
