Beltangady: Farmer comes up with innovative idea to prevent monkey menace

Daijiworld Media Network - Beltangady (MS)

Beltangady, Aug 5: The rate of coconut has skyrocketed. Though the consumers are having a tough time because of the price rise, the farmers who grow coconuts are happy. However, the farmers of the coastal region are suffering as their coconut crop is devastated by the monkeys. However, a farmer from Padmunja village of the taluk has come up with a novel idea to keep the monkey at bay.

Kunjanna alias Kunja Moolya, the innovative farmer, has tied asbestos sheets to the coconut tree, thereby preventing the monkeys from climbing the tree and accessing the coconuts. Kunjanna's livelihood depends on coconut. He could not bear the attack of monkeys on his coconut farm. When he tried to chase them away, they used to come back in more numbers.

Kunjanna cut the asbestos sheets and tied them to the centre part of the coconut tree. In addition, he cut the palm branches on top, thereby preventing the monkeys from jumping from one tree to another. This technique can be applied for both short and tall coconut trees. In addition, this technique prevents the rats from climbing up the trees also.

Many farmers of the taluk are using the technique developed by Kunjanna and heaving a sigh of relief as their crop is safe from the attack of monkeys now.

If I am not mistaken, the present day "Asbestos Sheets" are just cement sheets. They don't contain any asbestos fibre. So all this talk about health hazard is meaningless.

Asbestos are more dangerous when inhaling fumes inside a closed chamber, or while cutting the asbestos, inhaling its dust.
But in open area, since there is full of fresh air circulation, so no need to worry.
Good idea, but steel or tin is better for rat.

On of my recent readings was about a techie in Northern Karnataka, who assembled a device that produces noise to keep wild animals (especially deer in his case) away from his farm. He used old fan components, connected to the Bicycle bar and incorporated a steel plate and a stick to hit the plate. It made a sound of hitting the plate while air blows and the fan runs.

Monkeys get irritated by loud noise. Farmers can use solar electricity to produce noise like above to keep away the monkey menace.

Asbestos has been classified as a known human carcinogen (a substance that causes cancer). It is banned in various countries. But in India it is being used indiscriminately!

Cutting the palm branches short might be a bad idea because through the leaves a tree prepares its food. There are chances that the tree gradually weakens and fruit bearing capacity reduces.

Secondly accessive use of asbestos is harmful to health.
