Udupi, Jul 30: Huge mass of sea waste has floated and got deposited on the coast all across the Malpe coastline. It is said that this signifies an increase in fish population in the sea and hence there is a smile on the faces of the fishermen. But many, who do not have knowledge of the organic value of this waste, have been angry at the officials for not clearing the waste.

Sudesh, in-charge of Malpe Development Committee, said that the staff was asked to remove the waste from the beach three weeks back and they were told to take away only the plastic waste. He noted that many have been insisting that the other waste should also be removed. He said that they have been explaining about the importance of organic waste and its role in enhancing the fisheries wealth. He explained that snails and scorpions come to eat up this organic waste and hence it is not useless.

Chief scientist of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute at Mangaluru, Dr Pratibha Rohit, said that many rivers pour into the Arabian Sea in the west coast and therefore as compared to the east coast, organic waste is witnessed more in the western coast. She said that because of this, productivity on the west coast is comparatively more.
