Mangaluru/Udupi, Jul 12: Once again, the city went under lockdown on Sunday, July 12 as part of the state government's strategy amid the rising number of coronavirus cases.

The Sunday lockdown began from July 5 and will continue every week.

The streets wore a deserted look as shops and markets remained closed.

People however were seen outside Nandini outlets. Shops selling essential commodities like milk and medicines are functioning as usual. Meat and fish are not available.

Police have installed barricades and strict measures are in place to ensure that no one violates lockdown norms. Those violating the lockdown would be fined.

Hospitals are functioning normally. Only those with valid reasons are allowed to step out of their houses.

Coronavirus cases in Dakshina Kannada have seen an upward trend for the past few days. The tally crossed the 2000-mark on Saturday, July 11, with 186 new cases recorded in the district, the highest single-day spike so far. As many as 41 deaths have occurred so far.

Udupi

Udupi extended complete support to yet another Sunday lockdown enforced amid rising coronavirus cases. On Sunday, July 12, all the shops, and establishments stopped functioning. Consecutively for the second Sunday, the Santhekatte weekly market remained closed.

Stores selling essential services and medicines are the only shops that have been allowed to function. With security tightened, the police are maintaining a strict vigil on the movement of vehicles.

In many parts of the district, people have resorted to imposing self lockdown and minimizing their movement outside.
