Masses on Sundays cancelled in Mangalore diocese churches due to reimposed lockdown

Mangaluru, Jul 1: The bishop of Mangalore diocese Dr Peter Paul Saldanha has advised parishes in the diocese not to celebrate Holy Masses on Sundays in the context of the reimposed state-wide lockdown on Sundays.

In a circular, the bishop said, “The Karnataka government has issued an order re-imposing lockdown on Sundays beginning from July 5 until August 2. This means, no activity other than essential services and supplies is allowed. This situation affects our celebration of Sunday Masses.

“While the lockdown on Sundays prevents people from participating in the Sunday Mass, they can fulfil the Sunday obligation by participating in Masses on Saturday held after 4 pm. Hence parish priests can arrange to have more than one Mass on Saturday evenings taking into account the convenience of the people.

“Because of the restriction of space in the church and social distancing, it may not be possible to accommodate at Mass all those who are not prevented from participating in it. Therefore, as a matter of exception in these difficult circumstances, in the diocese of Mangalore, I permit the parish priests to have Masses with Sunday Liturgy – Sunday Proper, Readings, homily, prayer of the faithful, etc on Friday evenings after 4.00 p.m. This provision can be used only when lockdown is mandated on Sunday. This permission cannot be extended to other days and other times.

“This pastoral response of having Friday evening Masses with Sunday Liturgy is a temporary measure (an exception) made by the Bishop for the benefit of those Catholics who find it impossible to attend Mass on Saturday evening considering that they should not be deprived of the riches offered in the Sunday liturgy. On other days and times, Masses are to be celebrated as indicated in the Liturgical Ordo. The faithful can draw immense spiritual benefit by participating in weekday Masses celebrated without Sunday liturgy.

“Bearing in mind the increasing number of cases of Covid-19, containment zones in and around parishes, and taking into account the different context and situation experienced in diverse geographical areas, Parish Priests are granted permission to decide about having or not having Masses in their respective parishes in consultation with the Parish Pastoral Council and Covid-19 Safety Committee. In case, they decide not to have Masses for a short period of time in their parish church, they should apply the same principles for weddings, funerals and other occasions,” the bishop said in the circular.

It may be recalled, concerned over the sharp rise in COVID 19 positive cases and infections in Karnataka, the state government had decided to impose lockdown on every Sunday from July 5 in the entire state.

    We need a lot of prayers to stop communist chinese bringing out more deadlier viruses. They are already bringing out stories of new virus outbreaks here and there. Also now then WHO playing fear of high number of infections, mainly seems to preparing everyone for their lucrative business of mandatory vaccination.

    Btw virus or viral means definitely it will affect most of the population. Experts say, of those affected 80% will have mild infection or no symptoms, 15% will have pneumonia, 4% severe infections and 1% death rate.

    Since it is viral whatever precautions one takes, it needs to pass and go or people need put PPE suit for 24x7 for one month to avoid it. There comes the prayers factor atleast with Divine intervention one wouldn't get it or get a milder infection and holy masses are the most powerful prayers. We need them so that communists Chinese will not again venture into more deadly viruses.

    Lockdowns maybe communist chinese agenda to bring down world economy, to show their economic supremacy over all. When open up again infections spread and so on. It will repeat till everyone has antibodies for it.

    Vaccination how effective, God only knows. So prayers are only choice for mankind as God already showed mankind how vulnerable they are by allowing this tiny virus. And with prayers definitely there will be better treatment for it or more survivals or virus itself may vanish soon. Also all need to pray for communist chinese so to come out of their wicked plan of controlling the world through viruses, vaccination, incursions or invasion.

    But the situation requires practicality, not just prayers. And definitely not the type of prayers that can put oneself and their loved ones at risk.

    Stay at home pls.

    The God that created you also created the virus. It's survival of fittest and smartest. People suffer not (just) for their sins, but their stupidity.

    Dear Friend,

    You should check before you call it ( or anything else ) a story.

    When there are earthquakes, tsunamis, floods and all kinds of natural disasters and people are helpless, the only option left is GOD alone.
    People are helpless before this virus but places of worship are closed and also people are praying less because of various pleasures (temporary) they seek.

    If this virus is a weapon (possible) . If there are more viruses like this. ( There are countries with bioweapons in their aresenal)
    God alone is the option. You may be able to prevent one virus but how many more can you prevent?
    The better option is to keep religious places of worship open with strict adherence to safety protocols.

    This world is evil. There are a lot of evil and cunning people. You can't trust anyone easily. Evidence can be created and destroyed easily. You see a lot of negative news. This is because people have become evil and corrupt. This is at an individual level. How much more evil are the people with power, wealth and possession. God alone knows it.

    Your "reality" is what you are made to believe in and may not be the truth. You cannot trust anything easily
    You are aware how the communists are trying to take over our land. They pretend to help but they stab you in the back. They are far more cunning.

    Stupidity is due to the lack of Wisdom.
    If you apply logic in a wrong manner, you can justify anything you think.

    When the situation becomes and you become helpless, your only option is GOD. Even atheists will start believing in GOD.
    God does not create bad things. It is the stupidity of of humans and desire for evil that bring about such bad things.
    It would be better if you would spend more time praying that such bad things do not take place and this pandemic would come to end.

    When you are helpless, you will be in need of God. This pandemic has made people realise a lot of good things. We should pray for the one who have fallen astray.
