No decision yet to impose curfew in SL on Sunday

Colombo, Jun 5 (IANS): There was no decision yet to impose an islandwide curfew due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka on Sunday after the one declared earlier this week will be relaxed on Saturday, a senior official from the President's Office said.

"The islandwide curfew will be relaxed on Saturday morning as earlier announced and there is no decision as yet to impose a nationwide curfew this weekend," the official told the Daily Mirror newspaper on Thursday.

"Discussions on this matter have not been held. Further, there has been no discussion as yet to lift the curfew completely from next week."

Sri Lanka relaxed a curfew in Colombo and Gampaha from May 26 but since then has been imposing a nationwide curfew on Sunday to prevent public gatherings.

This weekend will be the first since May 26 that a nationwide curfew will not be imposed on Sunday.

Sri Lanka has so far reported 1,797 COVID-19 cases, with 11 deaths.
