Bengaluru: State backtracks from decision to open schools on July 1

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jun 4: The government, which had taken a considered decision to open schools in phases commencing July 1, has now decided against opening schools on this date. The government was forced to change its stance on account of overwhelming opposition to its decision.

On Tuesday, education minister Suresh Kumar, had announced about the plan to open schools in July. He had also asked the headmasters of schools to convene meetings with parents, guardians, partners and school development and monitoring committees to arrive at a consensus if possible and convey the decision taken therein by uploading it online.

Suresh Kumar

The department of public instruction has permitted schools to begin the admission process for the ensuing academic year with effect from June 8. However, it has said that parents or guardians alone should visit the schools for this purpose and children should not accompany them to school.

On Wednesday, Suresh Kumar clarified that July 1 is not the date decided by the government for the reopening of the schools. He told reporters that that is the date planned by the education department for the school reopening.

After the government came out with its decision to open schools on July 1, many educationists including V P Niranjanaradhya and Vasudeva Sharma had urged the government not to take such decisions in haste and wait for the situation to stabilise. Former education minister Tanveer Sait, in a letter written to Suresh Kumar, opined that opening of schools cannot be treated as right at this juncture as coronavirus infection has been spreading across the state. He said that everyone will become panicky even if children suffer from fever, cold etc. Therefore, he has suggested forming a committee of experts and taking a decision based on its report.

Siddaramaiah opposes

Former chief minister Siddaramaiah, felt that it would be wiser to put off opening of schools by a couple of months after making all preparations. He felt that it would be not very much practicable to distribute children at the rate of two per bench, using sanitisers and conducting online classes. He said that such steps can be taken only if there is no other go after waiting and cogitating on all the issues concerned, adding that opening of schools in August or September would be more feasible.

An online campaign against the government's decision to open schools on July 1 has been launched. It has the support of many educationists, including former chief minister Siddaramaiah, and former education minister Tanveer Sait among others.

The education minister & the govt must be firm, because the education lobby will coerce the parents into accepting their decisions, already they are arm twisting & blackmailing them regarding fees. Some of the students are denied access to the online classes ,even though the academic year is yet to start. ESPECIALLY the andhra management schools in b'lore.they don't care the govt.

Thank god for digital India, e learning helps, it need not be conducting classes online, but majority of parents have smartphones (even the poorest ones who manage to send their kids to good schools) send a fixed amount of work per day, subject and periodwise, let the parents teach the younger children, the older ones or the ones in high school need little to no help in learning by themselves. But yes, the teachers need to be paid, even if its half their salary, because they have household to run too the assignments can be checked by the teacher at the end of the day by send her the assignments through WhatsApp. This is how my child's school has been functioning since 1st of April. And I find this system to be good. Ofcourse the parents need to put in efforts, much more than before, but why not, after all it's our children we are going to teach

None of the parents would want to push their children to go to school when this pandemic is spreading. It will become very difficult to manage control in school . It’s better children are safe at their homes until situation stabilises. Please don’t reopen now. You can always think of reducing the syllabus for this academic & reopen it later. We are not going to loose anything

This is not right time to re-open the schools as corona virus infection is increasing rapidly and day by day graph is becoming almost vertical. Young students especially students of pre-primary and primary grades are very unlikely to follow social distancing and other precautionary measures. In this situation online classes are best solution to keep our children engaged in their studies.

Before passing an order or circular with regard to opening of schools on 1st July 2020,government should have applied their mind sensibly at this juncture and should not have come under the pressure of some lobbies. Each and every sensible party knows the severity of spread of corona virus pandemic disease at an alarming rate.Under the present condition,do you think that parents will agree to send their children to school. They too are with heart and want their children to be safe and health. Here health is more important than any other things.Health comes first and then others.people may say children's safety and health will be protected, don't worry about sending children to schools and we will take care of.It is always easy said than done.If any child is infected by chance (I pray not to happen like that) knowingly or unknowingly, then who will take the responsibility.nobody will come forward. Then government will say it is the responsibility of the parents and who said that your children should be sent to schools.Under that circumstances, who will be the loser.None other than the parents.Good decision by the state government to backtracks from opening of schools at least by the pressure of parents.

Dear minister, while your desire to see our children learn (and presumably not lose a year of schooling) is laudable, the idea of physically reopening schools is totally a bad idea.
Growing children of all ages do not yet have the discipline required to maintain all the necessary rules of social distancing AT ALL TIMES ( physical distancing, masks on at all times, frequent hand washing, etc).
Shared facilities like the school buses, playground equipment, dining halls and restrooms pose an ever present risk of contaminated surfaces.
Even a few minor lapses by a few students could potentially lead to the entire school becoming a hotspot and multiple students inadvertently becoming superspreaders. Can you imagine the trauma to those children, as well as the huge negative publicity for the school?
With all due respect, are you willing to put your own children/grandchildren through this risk?
Online classes for the urban and rural poor, especially during the monsoons when reception can be poor and power supply patchy is admittedly an issue. You could consider having multiple reruns of the same lesson through the day &/or enable a system where all the lessons are available in an archive and accessible at any time.
The way things stand, we’re steadily approaching the peak of the infection, and so hopefully things should start to stabilize and improve from August.

Children might not be conscious of sanitizing hands or constantly maintaining physical distance, it is not a good idea to call them back to schools on these situations.

I don’t mind if my children’s has to miss a school year, my wife and I can homeschool them. We are more worried about them being exposed to infection when they goes back to School.

Can't make out who will benefit opening the school, but there are many reasons valid not to open . Children are future of the family /society/country. Will the govt or the ministers bear the cost of medical expenses of the little kids if affected. 1srlt let the people in the parliament n lower houses come n sit the meeting room feel the pain by seeing the people suffering due to epidemic n later think of sending their loved ones to school or college.
One side migrants n poor are suffering silently n dying due to lack of food n supplies.
No money to treat their elderly people/ money to run the family is another issue ...likewise people in jobs are worried of safeguarding their jobs...salary cut ..school fees to be paid/transport/books etc ate burdening theming. Many with their loans like home loans credit cards etc BETTTER STOP THE IDEA OF OPENING THE SCHOOLS.
TAKE CONTROL OF THE SITUATION HELP THE POOR N NEEDY .CONCENTRATE ON TREATMENT DRUG FORMATION TO ERADICATE THE EPIDEMIC. TACKLD THE BORDER ISSUES. ENSURE BETTER INFRA STRUCTURE TO people safety etc.....
STTING IN SOME CORNER OF THE COUNTRY N GIVING ORDERS WILL NOT TO PEOPLE WILL NOT HELP .....POLITICIANS DON'T PLAY WITH PEOPLES LUVES !!

    Godwin,

Even experts do not when antidote will arrive. Few are saying 2021 - Mid. But, just inventing antidote is not sufficient. We need to give it to every person in society.

Pulse Polio - Only in India - For less than 5 years Old - Took 20 years to control the disease.

Covid-19 is about - Whole world - For all age population.. How many years it will take to give Vaccine to everyone in the world? When it will start.

Lot of diseases like Malaria, HIV/AIDS, Dengue, Chickengunya etc.. does not have Vaccine or Antidote.

Herd Immunity requires 70%-90% people getting infected & developing Antibody in their body.
Most studies across the world showing Just 5% Herd immunity in 6 Months of Covid-19..

When we will have 70-90% Herd immunity? It may take upto 2024... atleast.

With due respect, the diseases you mentioned don't spread the same way as Covid does. It's like comparing apples to oranges. Covid is a highly infectious disease for , ,which even treatments are under trial. How can we expect children to maintain all the protocols that may prevent the infection? It's just not the time to open up schools where thousands of children would be put under risk, let's wait for the situation to get under control, then we can think of schools. Parents need to engage their children with or without online classes, it's their kid and their responsibility to do so!
