Karnataka bans spitting of chewed tobacco products in public places

Bengaluru, May 31 (IANS): The Karnataka government has banned spitting of chewed tobacco and 'paan masala' in public places across the state, in an effort to avert the spread of COVID-19, an official said on Saturday.

"As per the powers conferred by the Karnataka Epidemic Diseases Ordinance 2020 Section 4(2) the state has banned the use of chewing tobacco products and consumption of paan masala products and spitting them in public places, so as to prevent the spread of corona and other communicable diseases," said an official in an order.

Violators will be booked under IPC Sections 188, 268, 269 and 270 and others.

The Karnataka government has already banned the sale of a single cigarette.

The central government had asked all the states and union territories in April to initiate steps to curb public use of tobacco to tackle spread of coronavirus.

The World Health Organisation and the Indian Council of Medical Research have already advised against public spitting in view of the pandemic.

The Karnataka BJP government is making foolish of his citizens on "World No Tobacco Day" using COVID-19 as threat.
You’ve probably heard it said that you can get arrested and flogged for chewing gum in Singapore. Thus, along with a ban on littering, spitting, throwing mucus from the nose, graffiti and urinating anywhere and not in the toilet, he had put a ban on chewing gums as well, to protect the hygiene of the country.

It is illegal to sell or own chewing gum in Singapore.

    1. How will government will implement the spitting when sells are open and there are no proper disposables?
    2. Is littering, spitting, throwing mucus from the nose and urinating anywhere and not in the toilet don't cause the disease to spread?
    3. Why not Karnataka implement an 'Rwanda Model' of mandatory cleaning of the city by all citizens every fourth Saturday of the month?

Is there a penalty for spitting, if there is why are the authorities not enforcing it. Even throwing waste on roads and public places the law breakers should be punished by doing some community work, without differentiating anyone. Only by imposing a fine we can stop people from spitting and throwing waste. It will surely work. By any way of education people's minds set will not improve.

Chewing pan, relishing Gutka, is a national obsession !!! The statutory warning of oral cancer, does not have any effects on addict's.. Indians residing, traveling abroad consciously hesitate to indulge in this disgusting habit, fearing stringent fines, jail terms... Hope the state enforces new stringent legislations to prevent such national pastimes at the earliest !!!!

Why ban spitting of tobacco products and pan masala only? What about people clearing their throat and leaving a mess on the streets? The law should be
stringent on the violators who must be made to pay a very heavy cash penalty
apart from forcing them to clear their mess. The appointment of cleaning marshals
scheme of Mumbai can be tried in the state.

Why banning chewed tobacco and pan masala only? What about people clearing their throat on the streets? Spitting per se should have been banned .Violators
should be made to pay up hefty fines besides clearing their mess. Cleaning
marshals experimented in Mumbai can be tried in the state.

I spite of smoking ban still it takes place in manipal every nook and corner you find smoking the small shops near the hospitals, temples, hotels, tea stalls etc are favorite places for smokers no action takes place but only you find no smoking signs. The police should come in civil dress and see the fun fare day by day it is increasing with no action
