Mangaluru: Central market closed, vendors asked to shift to APMC yard at Baikampady

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (AM)

Mangaluru, Apr 7: Vendors at central market in the city have been asked to approach the APMC yard at Baikampady and conduct business activities there as the two old buildings of central market will be repaired.

The Mangaluru City Corporation, in a media release stated, “The corporation market situated at Kasba Bazar village known as central vegetable and fish market is in two old buildings. These buildings have been in a dilapidated condition and are declared as beyond repair. Therefore, the corporation has taken steps to demolish the same and erect a new building on modern lines by complying with all the requirements to make shopping easy and more congenial from the health and sanitation point of view.

“Furthermore, the present market building does not suit to contain the new coronavirus (COVID-19) disease which requires social distancing to be maintained wherever people congregate. This is necessary keeping in view of the overall health and wellbeing of the citizens in the city.

“Hence, considering the circumstances the corporation had decided to close down the market. No business would be allowed to continue in the building any further.

“However, vendors could approach the APMC yard at Baikampady and secure a spot if they wished to continue with their business,” stated the media release.

This building should have been demolished at least 20 years back. But due to the corrupt people involved in doing business there, there has been pressure on the authorities not to demolish. Now is the right time for them. The building should be completely demolished and alternative market should be build on the other side of the National highway. This will reduce the congestion and pollution from the city.

First of all b ykampady is not in Mangalore it's in new Mangalore, without building alternative location for retailers Idea of shifting central market is wrong. If congestion is the reason till now why they didn't shift DC office , service bus stand and RTO ?

It is commercial interests which is why many are not interested to shift to APMC market at Baikampadi. In APMC market all goods vehicles entering will noted and weighed.

The central market building was very unsafe from other natural disasters like fire, earthquake etc. Also shifting the wholesale market to outskirts would help in easing of traffic, and also expansion of the city. It is good that old building is being demolished. If MCC constructs a multi level parking lot instead of another market building it would be more beneficial as there is hardly any parking place in and around that area.

Your interest and concern is for the vehicles and their owners. Not for people's safety. Build a Market with Pay and Park. How about it?
What about peopke travel by bus and Tuk tuk. Looking for cheap foods. You want a Swimming pool
When there is no water to drink..
Why are you stuck to Wholesale Market. No it is Central Market. Even lawyers have
    Offices in there.
Safety can be rectified. Earthquake in Mangalore? 60 + percent buildings have no access to Fire response vehicles in the city even if they are available.

Social distancing is just the excuse. What has happened to the service/express bus terminus to be shifted? Last 22 years I have been hearing about the shift of the express/service bus terminus. 31st of March the market was open there was no social distancing but did covid 19 spread. If there is going to rennovate or build a new structure it would take a another decade or so.

Rain is few times a year in Sharjah. Why not we build good fish markets with hygiene procedures in place. We need not emulate Sharjah.....nothing can stop us from having clean ,markets for fish, vegetable and meat. I have seen cows dwelling in vegetable market. With strict penalties discipline can be installed. I fully agree with Abdulla.

From the history of Corporation projects , if existing central market is demolished., may not be seen again for decades to come. When the tax revenue falls due to unemployment project will be dead. Visit Bejai,Urwa, and Kadri markets yo enjoy
    Modern market place.
No need from political patrons or God fathers to realize what a mess this will be
When recovered from the ongoing curse. Public will respond . Bahut hua Sanman.
One photo op with Potli of Ration fistribution will be forgotten.

Central Market closed vendors asked to move to Baikampady.
Not just and only wholesale vendors.and wholesale buyers.
Who were the shoppers at central market? General public including retailers.
    All things Fish,Meat,poultry,vegetables,fruits,flowers,groceries etc etc
We're traded and sold there. Head load local farmers are starting a loss.
All need to shut down and go away including the shoppers - general public.
No indication of new facility opening at central market.

You don't have any idea of wholesale market. It will be inAPMC Baikampady for wholesalers. So no congestion /block of vehicles. You just see the garbage near rupavani talkies or around the prese t so called mkt. Once the trade shifts to far away places like in other city Mnglr will be more clean and neat

    Ratan Bava,
No , I do not have any Idea of Wholesale Trade or Market of Mangaluru.
But I think your Knowledge of Kasba Village Central Market of Mangaluro is also Zero.
We are discussing the Headline Subject of the Media News release of MCC of shutting down Central Market.
Not shifting ONLY the Whole Sale Market. If your issue is with just the garbage near Rupavani Cinema ,generated by Wholesale Vendors Move only THESE vendors.
Why trouble all the vendors and shoppers?
Swatch Barath was declared successful. Still you are sad about Garbage.
Deal with the issue of Garbage.

I think Jemma you are over reacting to the Govt decesion . Even in Udupi they shifted Fish Market from present PPC road to Booddha Gudde. Initially it was a pain for everyone and now we have beautiful fish market in heart of the city . This will be the same and Central market will come with the new infrastructure needed for mangalore. Anyway , Smart is not about raising the whole city and rebuilding. India cannot afford it though. It was reorganising they city and main thing was going digital and most of the cities are already there .

I commend the timing chosen by the authorities to demolish the buildings. If in other times, there could have been a lot of political game, played to protect the shopkeepers by their Godfathers. Now, when the building is shut due to Corona, there can't be any big brother coming to their rescue. Well, the demolishing is not without giving the business people an alternative solution.

Please go to Baikampady as you came to Hampankatta.
