New Delhi, Apr 1: One of the offshoots of the prolonged lockdown period in the country appears to be increase in family quarrels. Media reports have already come out with tales of liquor addicts from various states who have committed suicides because of the fact that liquor shops are closed.

Available statistics has indicated that during a week of lockdown, there was increase in the atrocities on women. National Commission for Women received 58 such complaints between March 24 and 30. Most of them are from north India, particularly Punjab. President of the commission Rekha Sharma, has said that the actual number may be five to six times this number, duly adding that women from the lower income group send written complaint through post, which takes some time to reach her.

It is said that men at home try to turn their frustration against their wives. Fight happens on almost all issues like cooking, cleaning, etc. In some cases, in spite of lockdown, women went back to their parental homes. Rekha Sharma says that women find it hard to file complaint at this juncture. As all the members are at home, it becomes harder for her to register her complaint, she analyses. She has advised such women to contact the nearest police station or police helpline in such cases.

It is said that the men, who are not habituated to the idea of sitting at home idly are also getting depressed on account of non-availability of liquor, gutkha, cigarettes etc during lockdown. The discontentment and frustration on business front pours out at this time, and their easy target would be the wife and many get sadistic satisfaction out of aggression towards their wives, analysts say.
