Mangaluru, Feb 28: Taking into consideration contributions made by renowned entrepreneur K C Naik, to the fields of education and social service, Mangalore University honoured him with honorary doctorate at its convocation held here on Thursday, February 27.
Delivering keynote address at the convocation, union minister for parliamentary affairs and minister of state for external affairs, V Muraleedharan, called upon to bring innovative changes in the education system to enable it to respond well to the current day needs and challenges posed by the current times. He felt that introducing skill-based education at the PU level can supplement future employment needs.
Muraleedharan said that the new education policy that is planned to be implemented all over the country soon has all these things in it. As per the new policy, the students will get multiple choices right from secondary education till the stage of research, he stated.
At the convocation, doctor of literature degrees were handed to two persons, while 105 people got PhD degrees. Gold medals were presented to 34 graduates and postgraduates while 120 graduates received cash awards.
Vice chancellor of the university Prof P S Yadapadithaya, initiated the convocation. Registrar Prof A M Khan delivered introductory address. Prof P L Dharma, dean of arts department Prof P L Dharma, dean for education Prof Kishore Kumar, commerce dean Prof Sridhar, and science dean Prof Shivalingaiah, read out the details of the graduates. Professor of Kannada, Dr Dhannajay Kumble, and Dr Ravishankar of English studies section compered the programme.
On this occasion, V Muraleedharan unveiled 'Shaheed Sthal' built by the university in honour of the martyrs.
