Bengaluru: SAI calling Srinivasa Gowda for trials is 'ridiculous', says former Olympian

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Feb 19: While Kambala jockey Srinivasa Gowda is being hailed by the State Government and the Sports Authority of India (SAI), elite professional sports persons question the double standards.

“While we appreciate Gowda being feted, we wonder why similar enthusiasm is not shown towards professional sports persons. We have nothing against Srinivasa Gowda being feted but can’t help questioning the double standards. Just because Gowda's performance was highlighted in the media, the government was quick to react,” an Olympian told Deccan Herald on condition of anonymity.

He further said that Sports Minister calling for trials is ‘ridiculous’. “The State government is justified in awarding him because Kambala is a popular event. But sports minister calling for trials is ridiculous. As a minister he must know that a person, without any prior training in that discipline, can't become an Olympic-grade athlete at the age of 28. He must have at least consulted a SAI regional director before putting out such a tweet,” the Olypmian lashed out.

National champion Nisha Millet, who took part in the 2000 Sydney Olympics pointed out that athletes are rewarded only when the win medals. “Many young athletes struggle to give wings to their dreams. We only recognise when an athlete gets to the destination but the big question is how one gets there. Getting there is the most difficult part and that's where an athlete needs full support. Our sporting structure is reward-based which is fundamentally wrong. We need to invest a lot at the grassroot level which is lacking,” she told the newspaper.

Meanwhile, another athlete said that only Olympic sporting disciplines get government grants and rewards, while other sports are neglected. “This discrimination needs to be stopped. It's not our fault if our sport is not part of the Olympics,” he said.

it is utterly foolishness on the part of SAI to call Gowda for the training. In fact it is so childish. He is 28 which is past prime for an athlete.

Secondly he is from Kambala where the bullocks or buffaloes pull him and he has to just hold on to them. Skill is definitely required todo that also.

Just go to Mangala stadium and see the athletes practice. It is really back breaking. Not easy. This kambala happens only once in a year and a practice of a month or so is enough.

Yes. Gowda has got talents but limited to Kambala. It is not right to make him run on tracks. He will be a total failure.

Everyone knows he is not a race athlete on a track.
But the potential he displayed on the kambla field can make him a good athlete.
If you see the lead rope he is holding during kambla race, it never straight but hanging lose throughout the race which shatters your claim that he was being pulled by the buffaloes. Moreover, if ever he is pulled, the next moment he would be lying on the field dragged by buffaloes.

When they drag you automatically you will reach the end point......just try.... . Let's see.. If you need any help into getting into this kambala for a trial let me know. Aikala kambala is very close to me .....he never went to gym... His work has made him strong...

Now that the hulabuloo on this Gowda has blown over, time for facts:
    1) Running barefoot in slush, being pulled by speeding half ton buffallos is different from running with shoes on athletic track
    2) Race is very different from Kambala type rural sports
    3) Has the watch where Gowdas time was recorded has been calibrated with modern time keeping machines of Sports?
    4) Very important, Gowda is already 35 years old, is there the stamina in him to run on track?
    5) seriously think Rijuju and CT Ravi pushed the social media panic button on this news....this is actually tuss pataki

Srinivas Gowda is a kambala jockey and in that sport he is a champion. Congratulations to him on his win. But he is not a track and field athlete. In Kambala the jockey is assisted by the bullocks and the faster the bullocks run, faster will be Srinivasa Gowda. It also depends on how he handles the bullocks, the same way as the jockeys handle horses in horses and for that he deserves full credit..
It was therefore hilarious to note that renowned and highly educated personalities like Shashi Tharoor and Anand Mahindra comparing him to Usain Bolt and hundreds of people passing ignorant comments and suggestions on this topic and wanting him to be a track and field athlete.
This sport cannot be compared to track events like sprints which are totally different. Gowda will not have the help of bullocks to run on sports tracks, and he himself acknowledges and says so. Therefore it would have been prudent to promote the kambala sport through his achievements, rather than making these outlandish comparisons.
Athletes therefore are right when they make these observations. Instead of making Srinivasa Gowda look like a fool, use his achievements in the sport that he has excelled in to make it popular.

Why you people are so much jealous dear athletes? Accept him by giving him a warm welcome.....dont discourage him. He got award because he deserved it. It's his luck to get honoured by the chief minister. He worked heard in the fields since some years. You all can't notice his hard work... ? It's not easy to run in the fields like that... We wish him all the very best and also for other kambala jockeys...

The Olympian makes valid criticisms. India would have better rankings in the Olympics if athletes in sports besides cricket had the resources to develop their talents.

No doubt the performance of jockey srinivas is great. But trials should be given to the 2 bullocks who made it possible to achieve the timings. On the tracks its the individual effort and at Kambala its the effort of the bullocks .

Is there Kambala in Pakistan? in case it is there in Pakistan, BJP Government may be interested in pursuing kambala matters...

Pakistan has become the role model for India now...there are about 130 countries above us in HDI ranking....

but our ruling party politicians talk only about Pakistan whose HDI ranking is worse than us....

It is a matter of great pride that srinivas Gowda was felicitated ,but also we should understand that in kambala the timekeeping isn't accurate ,also the jockey is pulled by the force of the bull, just because two prominent people tweeted the sports minister woke up from his slumber,

I salute jockey Gowda for his commitment. however to create such a hype is unnecessary. did any media or organisation/government acknowledge sports persons. never they have honoured. already we are comparing jockey with the great sprinter of the century. madness and please stop this. as a father of an state and national athlete, this kind of unwanted acknowledgment demotivates. dear sports ministry, please give due honour to deserving athletes.
hope this is not for political gain????

Budhia Singhf from Odhisa, a boy from the slums of India, became an overnight celebrity for running marathons from the age of three - but in the last five years his story has developed in ways no-one could have foreseen.
Budhia Singh could have been an Olympic hero, but India didn't care.
Where in the world is talent destroyed so callously like it was done in the case of the child prodigy?

Hope Srinivasa Gowda will not end up like Budhia Singh movie.

Instead, the comments like above will only jeopardize the interest and efforts.
