New Delhi, Feb 18 (IANS): The Delhi Police in its chargesheet against JNU student Sharjeel Imam and the PFI has blamed "continuous protests" for slow probe in the Jamia Millia Islamia violence case.
"Efforts are being made to expedite the investigation which has been slowed by continuous protests being carried out at Jamia Millia Islamia. Outcome of the same will be filed by the way of a supplementary chargesheet," the chargesheet filed by Delhi Police read.
It further stated that sufficient evidences have been gathered to persecute the accused persons.
The leaders involved in the December 15 incident, when violence erupted inside and outside Jamia campus, including student leaders who are named in the FIR have not been arrested so far, and their role in the present case is being ascertained and further action will be taken in due course of time.
Delhi Police have named Jawaharlal Nehru University student Sharjeel Imam as an "instigator" along with the Popular Front of India (PFI) in the chargesheet.
The chargesheet was filed before Saket court's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Gurmohina Kaur on February 13.
The police have also mentioned the role of PFI in the violence and stated that they probing the organisation.
The chargesheet was filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 307 (attempt to murder), 147 (rioting), 186 (obstructing public servant), 353 (assault) and 427 (mischief).
According to the chargesheet, empty bullet cartridges belonging to a 3.2 mm pistol were found following the violence on December 15.
CCTV footages, call record details (CDR) and statements of over 100 witnesses have been attached as evidence. The police will also release photographs for identification of the rioters.
So far 17 arrests have been made in the case, out of which nine are from New Friends Colony and eight from Jamia Nagar. No Jamia student has been named in the chargesheet.
The chargesheet stated that 95 people were injured in the violence, out of which 47 were police personnel.
Over six buses and three vehicles were damaged during the rioting, the chargesheet said.
