Mangaluru, Jan 28: "Research is the basis for all innovations. Technology demands advanced materials and the role of Materials Science is gaining importance. Materials Science is an interdisciplinary subject encompasses Physics, Chemistry and Engineering. Research in engineering is mainly based on Materials Science. 

"The field of Materials Science provides an opportunity to pursue a research career in Physics or Chemistry or Engineering," said Dr Nithyananda Shetty professor of Chemistry and Academic, NITK, Suratkal. He was speaking as the chief guest at the concluding session of 'Materialite' – an intercollegiate science competition for undergraduate students organized by Department of Materials Science, Mangalore University.

"Material Science is an active area of research in various fields and its role in renewable energy is very important," said Dr Mohan Rao, Head of the Department of Physics, MAHE, Manipal, and an alumnus of Materials Science Department. Dr Dhanajaya Kekuda from the Department of Physics, MIT, MAHE, another alumnus of the department also addressed the students, who shared his experiences in the department. Various competitions were held during the event including quiz, poster making, turncoat, with the novelty that all the competitions were science-based.

Over 75 students from 11 colleges under the Mangalore University participated in the event. The overall championship was bagged by Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College, Ujire and runner up shield was bagged by Poorna Prajna College, Udupi. The programme was presided by professor Manjunatha Pattabi president of Materials Science Forum and chairman of the Department.

Sonika Shetty welcomed the guests. Brahmari compered and Akshay VV proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was supported financially by State Bank of India, Mangalagangothri and Bank of Baroda (Vijaya Bank), Konaje.
