Mangaluru: Coronavirus - No need to be panicky, exercise caution

Mangaluru, Jan 24: In tune with the advisory issued by World Health Organization (WHO) after Coronavirus outbreak in China, district health department has requested the people from all over coastal Karnataka to exercise precautions. The department has already conveyed information to all the hospitals in the district about the virus.

The health department officials stated that India has never witnessed Coronavirus outbreak either recently or in the past. They said that WHO has asked all the countries to take precautions in view of spread of this virus in China. The officials said that people of Dakshina Kannada district need not be unduly perturbed about Coronavirus, but asked people going abroad and particularly those visiting China and those returning from there to be cautious.

Coronavirus can damage lungs and can even cause death through lung failure. How it spreads is not properly known. The possibility of this virus spreading to the people through animals, specifically cats, is more. It is necessary to keep distance from cats and other animals, but there is no need for apprehension, said Dr Naveenchandra of the health department.

Even though there are no Coronavirus cases in the district, as a measure of abundant precaution, a separate isolated ward has been set aside for such patients in Wenlock Hospital. This ward has one bed, and in cases of suspected cases, patients are admitted, checks are conducted, and treated, said medical superintendent of the hospital, Dr Rajeshwari Devi.
