Atletico Madrid beat Levante 2-1 to go 3rd in LaLiga

Madrid, Jan 5 (IANS): Atletico Madrid has edged Levante 2-1 and climbed to third place in LaLiga and remain within striking distance of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

After 19 matches, Atletico are tied on points with Sevilla at 35, but the Colchoneros are ahead in the table based on better goal difference. Levante, with 26 points, are ninth, just a point above Villarreal, who have a game in hand, reports Efe news.

The hosts started the match in high gear and created three chances in succession inside the first minute, yet neither Angel Correa, nor Joao Felix nor Saul Ñiguez could break the ice.

But the Colchoneros found success on the second wave, culminating in the 14th minute with a resounding strike from Correa, who has scored two of the team's last four goals and assisted on two others.

Just two minutes later, the score was level at 1-1 thanks to a goal by Levante's Roger following a Jose Campana free kick.

While the defending could have been better, the equaliser was mainly due to the skills of Campana and Roger, and the same was true of Felipe's goal in the 18th minute to give Atleti a 2-1 lead.

The match drifted in the second half, as the hosts failed to nail down the win and the visitors struggled to create opportunities until the final stretch, when Oblak had to come up with a pair of sensational stops in the space of 10 minutes to secure all three points for Atletico.
