Washington: MCA holds 30th anniversary, Christmas celebration

Media Release

Washington, Dec 9: Mangalorean Catholic Association (MCA) held a grand event of 30th anniversary that was combined with Christmas celebration on December 7 at Tandoori Nights of Fairfax, VA. The MC duo, Clint Almeida and Merlyn Mathias complemented each other very well and entertained the audience by their wits and humour while doing the time management of the programme pretty well.

The appetizers and the drinks were done well to feed the appetite of people before the main programme started. The script for the Musical Nativity Play from community children was excellently done under the leadership of Juliet Vas with help from other committee members. All the participant children and the background choir team led by Clint Almeida did an outstanding job.

V James Dante extended a warm welcome to everyone on behalf of his committee. He also welcomes all the past presidents of the association who were brought together for the first time at this event in the history of the association, followed by the dignitary Dr Austin D’Souza who flew from Chicago to attend the event as well as the delegates, the presidents of IACA and Goan DC Association, representing their communities.

This was followed by felicitation led by our felicitation team, Savio Fernandes and Renita Fernandes, who carried out the felicitation of all the presidents of the association, followed by Dr Austin D’Souza and the presidents of IACA and Goan DC Association. The presidents of the association were felicitated with bouquets and plaques by current and past committee members and their spouses. Dr Austin Dsouza was felicitated by the executive committee members with bouquet, plaque and a shawl. Then the presidents of IACA and Goan DC Association were felicitated by past committee members with bouquets and Certificates of Appreciation.

Then as the families and children were eagerly waiting, Santa arrived promptly with his carriage full of gifts to the background music, cheered by all young and the old. He distributed individual wrapped gifts brought by parents for their children and took pictures with the children. Immediately following Santa’s exit, it was time for singing the Christmas Carols with everyone’s participation, the choir team leading.

Dr Ajit Britto of Britto Orthodontics who donated towards the event and Lovee and Jerome Faison for sponsoring the Alexas for the raffle, all my committee members and their families, and past president Jacinta Mascarenhas for performing the grace before meals, were thanked. While some people headed out to enjoy the lavishly laid out buffet dinner by the banquet hall, other dance enthusiasts preferred to rock the floor with great music number from DJ couple John Lee and Carol Figueira.

The raffles were drawn during dinner and dance show and picture of all the presidents of the association was taken as a memory of this unique event.

Later the dancing continued while several spot prizes were declared by the MCs.

Congratulations to Mangalorean Catholic Association of DC and specifically to the leader of the team, V James. Such a wonderful idea and such a perfect event to trace the memories of the past years with all Presidents at one place. You have given us food for thought to do something new like this at our events. After reading comments of others, I went back and read about the other events.. You guys are definitely changing from the routine course to do some new things for the first time, but you guys are taking calculated risks, I think. Good luck with your adventures.

I fully agree with everything Jacob Kumar and others have written. It requires not only creating thinking but also courage to organize such events, that are viewed skeptically by many. Things are possible only when you dare. Great job Mr. Dante and the team for taking your association to the next level with different kind of thinking to lure people to your parties.

Congratulations to the leader Mr. V James Dante and the committee, what an awesome thought. Getting all the past Presidents at one place, that too for the Christmas event should have been a dream come true for the Presidents. You have trickled the idea in our minds to think of having such an event of our past Presidents at one of our future events. Great work.

Congratulations to James Dante and his team. I know James since our bachelor Bombay days when we used work together at Reliance Industries. He has the drive, interest and desire to always do something new for the community whether it is related to employee families or just his religious community. Reading this article and then the last few of the events Washington DC Mangalorean association, I can still see that that he has continued his tradition of trying daring things where others do not venture into. I remember that he was the one who started the Staff Club for Reliance Industries in New Bombay, amidst all odds when other managers were skeptical and unwilling to take up this task due to concerns of protests from workers. He changed the way of thinking of employee families from having just the dinner parties by forming a family library, sports club and organizing the Inter-club tournaments for the first time and put teams together to hold stage dramas to recognize talents of employee families. He was one of the best housie announcer we had at Reliance staff club events. I know that he was also very active in Parish activities and was the editor and publisher of a parish bulletin that was acclaimed as one of the best from Bombay Diocese. Then we lost touch since he left Reliance and moved abroad. But I am so thrilled to see my friend performing these incredible feats to bring people together. James, do come and visit us when you come to India next time. God bless and good luck.
