Davanagere: Posing as CS, women fleeced with promise of government funds

Davanagere, Dec 9: A cheating case in which miscreants collected lacs of rupees from innocent women with the promise of getting government money under various schemes, has surfaced. A case in this connection was registered in Hebbal, Bengaluru police station. The police said that the registration of the case was done as per Supreme Court directions and that the case would be transferred to Davanagere soon.

One among the accused had claimed to the members of Stree Shakti self-help group that he is the state government's chief secretary (CS) and the women had trusted him. On the basis of complaint given by Divya from Ghannagiri taluk in Davanagere district, case has been registered against Jagadish, a local Congress leader and son of the brother of former MLA Vadnal Rajanna, and MC Nagaraj.

Jagadish from Channagiri has some business interests in Davanagere. He also is a Congressman. Jagadish knew the president of Channagiri taluk Stree Shakti self-help group. Through him, M C Nagaraj, one of the accused, had come for an interview with the group president.

During the interview, Jagadish told the woman that Jagadish will do her a favour. Later, he used Nagaraj's cellphone to call the woman, claiming himself to be Gangadhar. He told her that he is the chief secretary of Karnataka and that the self-help group members will get eight lac rupees each under Fasal Bima insurance scheme. He told her that the ladies will have to spend something to get this amount. The women agreed to contribute as they expected huge sum in return.

Seven people including Divya, Padmavati and Deepu had remitted a total sum of Rs 20 lac into the bank account number provided by the accused in a bank at Hebbal. Once this money was remitted, the accused switched off his cellphones. The police said that the women has complained that Jagadish and MC Nagaraj had cheated them after collecting funds, and sought action against them.

The police have found that all the mobile phones in the name of the accused have been switched off. Some of these numbers apparently were not issued to him in his name. Jagadish has been questioned about this case, and truth will come out with the arrest of the main accused, the police said.
