Mangaluru: Court awards additional sentence to man who purchased stolen goods

Mangaluru, Dec 4: The fourth additional district and sessions court here has handed down two years of imprisonment apart for fine of Rs 2,000 to a person accused of buying stolen goods. He has also been sentenced to three and half years of additional imprisonment for repetition of crime.

Vijay Soni (60), resident of Jobart in Aliapur district in Madhya Pradesh faces the prospect of having to spend spend over five years in jail. In this case, six others who also are facing allegation of stealing have gone missing after securing bail. The theft-accused had stolen items from a silverware shop in Punjalkatte in 2012 and sold them to Vijay Soni.

Madia Bhuria (48), Bishan Bilal (46), Mohan Singh alias Munna (38), Amar Singh alias Amjat (33), Sardar (20) and Madan (40) had entered a shop at Punjakatte dealing in silver valuables by breaking open its door at night, and taken away 2.,5 kilograms of items worth about Rs 1.5 lac. They had returned to their village and sold the stolen items to Vijay Soni.

The police in an operation, not only arrested the thieves but also recovered the stolen items. Soni, who had bought the stolen items was also arrested and charged under sec 411 of Indian Penal Code.

The fourth additional district and sessions court which heard the case, pronounced its judgement on Tuesday December 3. Judge of the court, T P Ramalinge Gowda, came to the conclusion that the charge of accepting stolen goods has been proved. For this office, Soni was sent to two years in jail apart from fine of Rs 2,000. Taking serious view that Soni had earlier been sentenced once for similar office, the court awarded additional imprisonment of three and half years for repetitive crime.

The then Beltangady police circle inspector Rai, had conducted investigation and filed charge sheet in the court. Public prosecutor Harishchadra Udyava, had argued the case on behalf of the prosecution.
