Mangaluru, Dec 4: Recently, stock of onions had been received from Egypt. Now, the city has got 50 tonnes of onions from Turkey, which was offloaded at Bunder area on Tuesday December 3. 

The businessmen at the market do not expect onion prices to come down immediately. The onions are currently sold at Rs 100 to 120 per kg. 

The onions from Turkey, like many other foreign nations, are quite big in size. Since the last some weeks, arrival of onions in the local market has subsided and many workers who depended on onion market for their daily bread are facing a hard time. 

Even though the prices of the onion have skyrocketed, the farmers are not getting the benefit. The merchants are having a heyday. It is said that the hoarders have been driving the prices of onions now. In the past, huge stocks used to arrive from Pune and Dharwad and their prices were quoted on the basis of cost plus transportation. But the arrival of onions in the market has come down drastically, the price is going up uncontrollably, thus bringing tears in the eyes of farmers whose onion crops have failed, labourers who have lost work, and the customers who have to make room for additional money in their tight budget. However, tears of joy now seem to be trickling down the cheeks of middlemen who have been laughing all the way to the bank.
