Mangaluru: SJEC participates in workshop-cum-exhibition on Plastic Waste Management in Bengaluru

Mangaluru, Nov 29: A team consisting of alumni and students of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, participated in Workshop and Exhibition titled ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ organized by Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET), a Government of India Undertaking in the Department of Chemicals, Petrochemicals and Fertilizer. The theme of the event was Plastic Waste Management and the team from SJEC was led by Noel Deepak Shiri, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.



The event was organized at Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association (KASSIA) in association with Karnataka State Polymer Association (KSPA). The programme was inaugurated by union minister for Chemicals, Petrochemicals & Fertilizers, Sadananda Gowda, in the presence of Dr SK Nayak, director general of CIPET, Kailashnath Jha, Joint secretary of CIPET, Vijaya Kumar, president of KSPA and R Raju, president of KASSIA.

The workshop covered topics of recycling, plastic waste management, single-use packaging products and entrepreneurship in recycling. During the workshop, Noel presented an invited guest talk on the topic ‘Development of Waste Plastic Lumber and Bricks using Commingled (Mixed) Waste Plastics and Single-use Waste Plastics’.

Sadananda Gowda and other dignitaries appreciated the efforts put in by the team from SJEC. Project collaborator Wolfram Thurm from the German Funding Agency who had supported the project done by SJEC was present in the workshop.

The team members who participated and represented SJEC in this exhibition included Noel Deepak Shiri, Glen Pinto and Vishikha Keshav, alumni of SJEC and Mohammed Sinan, a current student of the college along with Wolfram Thurm, project collaborator from the German Funding Agency from Bauhaus Universität Weimar, Dresden, Germany.
