Panaji, Nov 14: "Goa will soon get its first 'Organic Agriculture University' that would aim to provide courses on organic crops which could be grown in the state," said deputy chief minister and the state's agriculture minister, Chandrakant Kavlekar on Wednesday.

Kavlekar, on Tuesday told PTI agency that minister Pramod Sawant gave an in-principle nod to the proposal during a meeting.

"The government has set a target of one year to set up the university, the first-of-its-kind in the state," he said, as quoted by PTI agency.

“By focusing on research and study of various organic crops suitable for Goan soil, the varsity will help in boosting the rural economy, which has been affected due to the halt of mining activities in Goa,” he added.

The Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth dean, Dr Madan Gopal Varshney will be appointed as chief strategist for setting up the organic agriculture university.
