Mangaluru, Oct 21: Mangaluru city police and district police observed Martyrs’ Day here at the District Armed Reserve Police premises on Monday, October 21 to commemorate the sacrifices of police personnel who lost their lives on duty.
Speaking on the occasion, session Judge of Dakshina Kannada justice Kadloor Satya Narayana Acharya said, "We need to take necessary steps to start a school in Mangaluru for the children of the police who sacrificed their lives on duty. Government should provide free education for the children of these policemen so that it motivates the children to join police force.
“Police are having sleepless nights to protect our society and maintain law and order in the society for which every citizens need to be grateful for them,” added Justice Satya Narayana.
Justice Kadloor Satya Narayana Acharya, IGP Arun Chakravarthy, and deputy commissioner Sindhu Rupesh offered floral tribute to the martyrs.
Meanwhile, police commissioner Dr P S Harsha read out the names of 292 martyrs including two martyrs from Mangaluru.
District superintendent of police B M Laxmi Prasad, DCP Laxmi Ganesh, Arungashu, Mangaluru City Corporation commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde and others were present.

Udupi, Oct 21: District police of Udupi organized Police Martyrs’ Day -2019 programme at Reserve Force center, Chandu ground, Udupi on Monday, October 21.
In the beginning, the Police Squad Convention was held in Chandu ground Udupi. Later, justice Chandrashekhar M Joshi, principal district and session judge arrived to the programme. Guard of honour was given by Parade commander Raghavendra DySP, DAR Udupi to the chief guest of the programme Chandrashekhar M Joshi. The guests of the event garlanded the statue of police martyr. On the orders of parade commander, gunshots were fired in the air and the national anthem was sung rendering respect to the martyred police officers. Detailed information regarding the policemen who sacrificed their lives on duty during the period of August 1, 2018 to September 31, 2019 were given by Nisha James, IPS, superintendent of police (SP) of Udupi district.
Addressing the police force, chief guest of the function, Chandrashekhar M Joshi said, “The military force of the nation protects our country from the enemy nations and outer forces, whereas the police department protects the people within or inside the nation. It is always seen that more attention is given to military forces, which protect the country from outer forces, whereas the police department is given lesser recognition. But the police department plays a vital role in the society. It is the responsibility of the police department to take the people and the society in the right path and hence they play a vital role in nation building.
“On this day, police officers, who sacrificed their lives during their duty, are remembered. They are inspiring to the entire police department and their commitment towards their work is to be followed by the policemen. The police department will face more and more challenges in the coming days and they are strong enough to face them under the framework of law.”
The police flag was lowered to half-mast and a two minutes of silence was observed in respect of the martyred policemen. Later, the lament was sung and the flag was raised to its height. On the permission of the chief guest of the programme, parade commander concluded the Martyrs’ Day -2019 programme.
SP Nisha James, and Kumarachandra, assistant superintendent of police were present on the dais. The programme was witnessed by the police department, the public, social workers as well as the members of the press. Manjunath from the police department, compered the programme.
