Mangaluru: Injustice to Konkani Christians in Academy positions - MLC Ivan D'Souza

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Oct 18: Ivan D'Souza, MLC, has accused the state government of meting out injustice to the Konkani Christian community by not appointing even one person for any of the 16 Academies including the Konkani Academy.

Speaking at a press conference in the city, Ivan said, "Out of the 11 dioceses of Christians, Konkani is the official language in Mangaluru, Udupi and Karwar. Out of the 200 Konkani books that were published by the Konkani Academy in the recent past, 150 books were written by Konkani Christians,”

“In 16 Academies, there are total 250 member positions. However, not a single membership is given to the people from the Konkani Christian community. This is an attempt to sideline the Konkani Christians. This discrimination has to be set right within 15 days or else protest will be held in front of Vidhana Soudha." Ivan informed.

The Konkani language was broken, divided and progress suppressed during the Portuguese rule in Goa. The current academicians, litterateurs and writers are striving to revive and restore those damages and develop the language to the best of their abilities. Why you a member of the so-called secular party again attempting to divide our language on communal lines?

Mr. Ivan, please ask yourself what have YOU done to the Konkani Christian Community? I can only remember two things: candle lit march for a nurse dead in the UK and useless Christmas Sowharda Kootas (where you don't spend a single rupee from your pocket), which have become an annual ritual. First, take the initiative to repair the roads which are also used by Konkani Christians. You staged dharna after September 14, 2008 Church attacks, but what have you done to punish the perpetrators and give justice to Konkani Christians? Have you forgotten that you are a lawyer and you could have done a lot in this regard. You may fool everyone, but not Konkani Christians. We have no faith in you. Contest an election and see how many Konkani Christians vote for you.
