Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (JD)

Udupi, Oct 18: After Daijiwold.com reported an accident where a 58-year-old injured herself while alighting from a train in Barkur railway station, Konkan Railway officials from Karwar visited her and assured help.

The woman identified as Vijaya Bhagwath fell into a pit on September 29 while alighting from the train. Barkur railway station lacks a platform and was the main cause for the accident. Vijaya who sustained grievous injuries is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Manipal.

Daijiworld.com had reported the incident. After this, V B Nikham, Konkan Railway regional manager from Karwar visited Vijaya Bhagwath in the hospital.

Speaking to Daijiworld.com, V B Nikham said, "In very rare cases, two trains come to same station and one train needs to be parked without platform. We will take care that in future no such incident happens. Now the injured woman can take the matter to railway compensation tribunal.  A detailed study will be held. We assure our full support to the woman and ensure she gets maximum compensation".

Vijaya Bhagwath has been  admitted in hospital since the accident. She has undergone 2 operations for placing plates and rod. The injury was such that her ankle bone protruded out of the skin. The family has already spent more than Rs 2 lac for the treatment. Vijaya Bhagwath will be discharged from the hospital on October 18. Currently she is undergoing physiotherapy treatment.

"We are retired people. We were living a peaceful life. But this incident has shocked us. Due to the negligence of department, we are suffering.  We had tweeted to railway department 8-9 times. Some officials had visited earlier. But nothing can cure her. At least one year is required for the recovery" says 71 year old Surendra Bhagwath, husband of Vijaya Bhagwath.

Railway officials have assured their full support to the family in getting the compensation.

She does not need assurance. 15L assurance is still pending. Pay her 25L, then begin inquiry. Railway ticket includes insurance not assurance.
