4 fans arrested after racist incidents in Bulgaria

Sofia, Oct 16 (IANS): The Bulgarian police have arrested four fans over racist incidents during Englands 6-0 win against Bulgaria here, the countrys interior ministry reported on Wednesday.

In a statement, the interior ministry said that more arrests were expected throughout the day.

Monday's match, which ended with Bulgaria's worst defeat in an official home game, was interrupted twice in the first half due to racist chants by the home fans. Several Bulgarian fans also gave the Nazi salute during the game.

Bulgaria's President Rumen Radev told reporters it was an "extremely unpleasant" incident and recalled that his country saved 50,000 Jewish citizens from being sent to death camps during World War II.

On Tuesday, the foreign ministry summoned the British ambassador to Bulgaria to assure him that the Balkan country is not racist.

The Bulgarian government expressed its dissatisfaction over some English newspaper headlines that called Bulgarians "shameful."
