LS Speaker calls for international order for peace

Belgrade, Oct 14 (IANS): Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said on Monday that a well-defined international order is imperative for a peaceful and prosperous world.

Birla, who is leading an Indian delegation to the 141st Assembly of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) here in the Serbian capital, was participating in the general debate on the theme "Strengthening International Law: Parliamentary roles and mechanisms and the contribution of Regional Cooperation".

Addressing the delegates, he said that a well-defined international order is imperative for a just, peaceful and prosperous world and the states, as signatories to the instruments of international law, have to ensure implementation in their respective territories. He further said that the Constitution of India endorses the international treaty obligations as binding.

Observing that 'Parliamentary diplomacy' has come into greater focus in recent times in strengthening international law, Birla said that it provides an opportunity for Parliaments in taking forward the agenda of development to the people and seek public consent in the process and plays a vital role in strengthening mutual ties.

According to a statement, Birla also applauded the vibrant role played by IPU in the promotion of parliamentary diplomacy and said that IPU, as the world organization of Parliaments, has become the "focal point for worldwide parliamentary dialogue" on key issues confronting the globe
