Iran unveils domestically built missile defence system

Tehran, Aug 22 (IANS): Iran unveiled on Thursday what it described as a domestically built long-range, surface-to-air missile air defence system, the media reported.

The missile system, dubbed Bavar-373, was unveiled during a ceremony in the presence of President Hassan Rouhani, Defence Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami and other senior military officials, Press TV reported.

The display comes amid rising tensions between the US and Iran in the Gulf.

Bavar-373 is a mobile missile defence system designed to intercept and destroy incoming hostile targets. The system employs missiles that have a maximum range of 300 kilometres, the report said.

The system is capable of simultaneously detecting up to 300 targets, tracking 60 targets at once and engaging six targets at a time.

According to the report, Bavar-373 is a competitor to Russia's S-300 missile system and brings a few substantial upgrades over the Russian system.
