Kasargod: Koraga community woman excels in education, remains unemployed

Daijiworld Media Network - Kasargod (SP)

Kasargod, Jul 16: Till a few decades back, the image of Koraga community was that of families living in secluded thickets or forests in unhygienic and poor conditions, which eked out a living by weaving bamboo baskets or rolling beedis. During that period, Koraga community members could not mingle with the mainstream and hence were deprived of educational, employment, and other opportunities.

Meenakshi from Boddody from Vorkady in the district has emerged as an exception to the above notion. She has secured M Phil degree, which has helped the community to get rid of a sense of inferiority complex. However, even after getting this degree, the woman continues to earn her livelihood by rolling beedis.

Meenakshi has won recognition as the first from among the Koraga community members to secure postgraduate degree. She had got this degree on the issues of language and culture. The then President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, had invited her to the Republic Day programme in 2014 as the chief guest. But the life of Meenakshi, a talented lady who was treated like a celebrity for a few years, has now been relegated to the level of any Koraga community lady living in rural set up.

Meenakshi happens to be the daughter of Shekhar and Tukru couple from Boddodi in Vorkady. Although she faced lot of hardships and constraints early in her life, she bravely faced them and continued with her education till she secured postgraduate degree. She gratefully recollects that her father, who worked as coolie, looked after the family out of his meagre income, and at the same time encouraged her to continue with the pursuit of her educational ambitions with support of teachers.

The research thesis she prepared for the degree contains rare collection of colloquial Tulu language her community converses in, and projection of the cultural life of Koragas. Meenakshi, who once got a chance to participate in the felicitation organized at Rashtrapati Bhavan, wants to bag a government job.

Strangely, people's representatives, political leaders and officials, who are expected to recognize such people and support them, have failed in doing anything for Meenakshi. The government needs to offer a job to Meenakshi where she will get an opportunity to use her talent and do justice to the job.

Other side I doubt ,that the girl has done her education M:Phil in tulu right?what about her other language s?when she didnt get any job since three years, could have tried to do something like computer too. ,to learn instead of rolling beedis at home.Nowadays one should be flexible ,till one bags job.Only waiting for job to fly to her lap also is not a option.

While feeling sorry for this poor young woman there are questions those need answers.
If she has earned the M. Phil degree and could not find a job since last three years then there is a serious problem with individual competency. Just having a degree does not qualify her to get the job anywhere unless she applies and writes competitive exams. If she really competent enough she would easily find a job in any private institutions of reputation. She can always try for the government job in course of time. This caste based job reservation system has destroyed quality and efficiency in every institution and government establishment. Many of these degree holders can't even spell simple words and it is a pity that people with merit and competency get side lined and get dumped.

If she was Meenakshi Rao, she would have got the job in 3 months. It is not competency issue, it is a clear cut bias in the society. I don't know how many places she has applied for the job, but if there are more than 10 rejections, I would consider hiring a lawyer and bring all those employers who rejected her to testify the reasons and compare her credentials with other employees. But who will bell the cat?

Schedule cast & schedule tribe people have some job reservation quota and I had seen those days in Mangalore such people working in government sectors. Let her enroll under government employment and follow up the matter. Surely, she will be offered a job and she must & she deserves. For the sake of lively hood, she rolls beedies out of sheer necessity for survival. So sad.
Private sector bosses may even defer noticing her cast & creed. In India people still differentiate/discriminate by cast and class attitude.

The existence of untouchability practice in the system makes this community deprived from getting into mainstream. It is easy to post our opinion and suggestion through this platform but ground reality is quite different if ask them their experiences.

    Darrel,

I am in a sector, where well-off parents prefer a 30K paying govt job for his son/daughter than a highly paying private sector employment. A father told me that he has built a house, has sufficient bank balance, educated his children to content - why struggle in competitive private sector as if your noose will be pulled at any time ? Let them work for limited hours, and spend rest of the time with their family. Go on world tour once a year.

Of-course, to get them into govt sector it takes a specific sum to be paid to the officer who will approve the application. That doesn't make a difference to him.

This is an eye opener for those who oppose reservations. But, wait. Unless you apply, you don't get a job. Let us know what are the places she has applied and how many of them rejected her. Did she approach the SC/ST Board helping her to find the job? With that kind of education, even American consulate will consider forwarding her application to one of the US Universities. Write a small biography and tell them what you have achieved against all the odds. Nothing wrong in trying. At the most they may say no. What she is going to loose. I think she needs little push to do better than rolling beedies.

When some parents do not allow their kids eating mid day lunch prepared by other castes/tribes, do you think pakora business is right for her? Unless we change our mindset, we have a long way to go. This is one of the reasons I support reservations so that govt. can uplift these folks suppressed for generations.

    NN,

Those parents who don't allow their children eat the mid-day meal cooked by a lower caste cook, are financially well off to give a tiffin to their child. Ignore them, and let those children who are in need of a meal eat. This meal system is made for needy children, not for rich landlords who can afford a tiffin to be sent along.

Those very discriminating people do not know if the 'Agarbatti' they are lighting or the garland they are using for worship is prepared by suitable caste individual. Fit to be ignored !

Why ? Koraga community is bound by state-based reservation ? She can't apply for central govt job ? If that was the case, how come so many Keralites (though not through reservation) working in Karnataka ?

Even if we disregard govt jobs, each bank/college/hospital has to employ a certain percentage of staff under reservation. Why can't she apply for such jobs ?

This is the best example of the drawbacks of reservations and excessive pampering by the government based on one's caste and religion. You may call me names, but let me put forward the facts.
Free education and admissions to colleges and higher education based on reservations gives a feel of comfort for dalits ( and every beneficiary of the government schemes based on caste). Everything in life seems easy. Once the degree is achieved, they sit back waiting for the government again to call them and offer a job.
There are number of schools and PU colleges in Kasaragod and dakshina Kannada district. easy to secure a job in private institutions, but the pay is low. even government institutions hire on temporary basis. If this lady had interest and put a little bit of effort, she would have been teaching in any of the schools, the least.
No pity for ignorance, at least from my side.

As per recent study...christian youths are much unemployed. Aapki sarkaar thi itni saal. What steps do you taken. Only good for vote bank. Now you are often demanding for Rs.15 lakhs from modiji for whom you never voted. First scrap reservation system, various bhagyas..discounted ration items. Make everybody capable to stand of there own by introducing much educational system every where.
Stop taking funds in convent schools. Give even more chance for people from poor families. Than only india will grow.

    Srikanth,

What is the percentage of Christians in Indian population ? Mere 2.3%. Even if all of them remain unemployed (though they aren't), how much different it makes ? Rest of the 87% plus population is all employed ??

Granted - Jossey didn't vote for Modi. You did surely ? What guts you hold to question the leader to keep his promises ? No, you aren't in need of 15L - what about his job assurance ? Do you muster courage any time to demand back what you deserve in return of your vote ?

Bhagyas are enjoyed by your community people. You should have been happy about it - not resentful. Education is free to those who wish to go to Govt. institutions. What the citizens worried about is employment after acquiring the education.

Chandu Karla, Do you aware what's happening around. People to whom congress government given loan are fleeing the country one by one. Government are after defaulters to recover money from them. Most of Government organised sectors are running on losses..like air india...railways...ONGC. Banking sector and Non-Banking sectors are running on losses. DHFL company showing loss of 2000 crores. Most of there offices closed. Employees of this company do not have job. Jet Airways cannot in operation. Before that King Fisher Airlines is suffered heavy losses. Which government go on issuing loans to these companies...even Reliance group headed by Anil Ambani. Share market almost collapsed. Investors who invested in crores have no hope. People's money looted by previous government. Now present government are doing new laws daily to save the government. More than lakh of bogus companies closed. Mansoor Khan's looting spree only comes to know during bjp is in central. Pahale sab tik tak chaltha tha. Correct picture now come foward in glance of all.

Common people, these people are brought up from the misery with a purpose. Give up RSS mentality and start assimilating, at-least when you are in public. Shocking is, a lower caste girl is alright to rape but to accept in any other form its polluting - height of hypocrisy !
