SC rebukes registry officials, lawyers

New Delhi, Jul 16 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Monday rebuked the Registry officials for shoddy work in listing urgent cases and unruly behaviour of some lawyers.

"What are your people doing? What is your staff doing? She (lawyer) had mentioned it last week also. Why are matters getting deleted?," a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said.

A woman lawyer informed the bench that her matter was deleted from the court list despite specific direction that he case would not be deleted.

The court asked the Registry official who responded that he would look into it. The court was irked with his response and said: "After two hours, you will come up with different stories and say 'this happened, that happened'."

The Chief Justice was again irked when several advocates started advancing arguments simultaneously over a plea relating to allocation of lawyers' chambers in a new building of the top court.

The bench said their behaviour is "unruly". The Chief Justice also recused to hear the matter, saying "list it before some other bench" as he is not a part of it.
