Udupi, Jul 15: The traditional fishermen of the coastal region get down to fishing as soon as the Monsoon sets in. However, this time around the situation is different. In a few days time the season of deep sea fishing boats is going to begin. The traditional fishermen, who thought of making quick money during the off season for deep sea fishing boats are unsatisfied.

The unfavouring weather has dampened the traditional fishing this year. Traditional fishing is mainly concentred in areas of Malpe, Kaup, Uchila, Mattu, Padukere, Thottam, Hoode and Bengre areas of the district. These fishermen go out for fishing in the dawn and return by dusk.

Though few of the traditional fishermen have gone for fishing, they have not got the fish in expected quantity. This has led to losses than profit as the operational cost of a day of fishing is more than the catch of fish. It is also learnt that the fishing was not upto the mark in areas of Hejamadi, Uchila, Kaup, Gagoli and Kodi.

Under the limits of Malpe fishing port, around 20 country boats ventured into the sea on July 13 and 14. But only three or four could get around 10 to 15 baskets of Sodi fish. This is not enough to meet their expenses of the day even.

It is said that as the rain is scanty and there is no overflowing of rivers, the sweet water has not yet merged with the salt water of the sea. For the same reason, the fishes have not come to the shore.

From the past two to three months, oil mixed muddy water was washing to the shore. It is said that this is due to the crude oil that is transported by the tanker ships in deep sea. This might have been the cause also for the destruction of the fish stock.

The traditional country boat fishermen have sought divine intervention due to the severe setback they received this year. They have offered Darshan Seve at Kalmady Bobbrya Daivasthana.
