I am not able to understand these people, the gold caught will be seized by the govt. Moreover he will be tried in court and imposed a fine. Gold from the govt treasury, as time goes on will be replaced by lead or silver bars coated by gold by some corrupt officials. Every thing is gone. What a wonderful nation to be born in.

Nothing new about gold smuggling. Few are caught and released but many pass through customs scot free. But this catch by the customs is unique. It is unbelievable that a person can smuggle gold concealed in a drilling machine, and that too 2,800 grams.

It's because of high import duty. The new proposed duty is 2.5% higher ; 12.5%.So there will be more such smuggling since the consumer have to shell out a big diffrence comparing to the international market. It's a good move from the econmic perspective as it will curb the import and will ultimately reduce the current account deficit( value of differnece between export and import),hence reslting in a better rupee value.
