No extension for Saravana Bhavan restaurant chain owner's surrender

New Delhi, Jul 9 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to grant any relief to Saravana Bhavan restaurant chain owner P. Rajagopal, who sought extension of time to surrender citing medical grounds in a murder case.

The apex court queried Rajagopal's counsel that if he was so ill, then why did he not mention his illness during the hearings. Then the court declined to give relief to him.

Rajagopal, 71, also sought to exempt him from surrendering in jail but treat his hospitalization as deemed jail term. The court did not agree.

Rajagopal, founder of a restaurant chain popular in the country and overseas, was sentenced to 10 years in 2004 on charges of killing an employee whose wife he wanted to make his third wife.

When the woman refused the proposal, he ordered her husband killed.

Rajagopal was sentenced to life imprisonment. He moved the apex court to delay the beginning of his term on July 7, citing ill health.

Rajagopal was supposed to surrender on July 7 after his life conviction was upheld by the apex court in March. He moved the court on Monday, citing his hospitalization and sought more time.

Criminal, thats what he is.. and he is negotiating on his punishment which shows he has no what so ever guilt.. I have boycotted going to Saravana Bhavan along with a bunch of friend who are showing support against this heinous crime... this is my little initiative as this is all I can do.. eating there gives him profit, with money comes power, with power comes confidence to commit crime.. and I do not support this.. But I know there lot of people who think what if he is a criminal I want to pamper my taste buds, which is sad

On the advice of an astrologer, he obsessively tried to take Jeevajothi, the daughter of one of his employees, as his third wife, but she was already married to one of his other employees, and rejected him. He orchestrated multiple threats, beatings and exorcism against her and her family. In 2001, after one attempted murder, he successfully orchestrated the murder of her husband Santhakumar. He was sentenced to life for the murder. On March 29, 2019, SC upheld the conviction of life imprisonment and he was told to surrender on July 07, 2019. By his appearance, he was looking like a saint till recently. One of the Saravana hotels is there in Mumbai.

When the woman refused the proposal, he ordered her husband killed. It is said that King David in biblical times did the same indirectly. Fear of God seem to disappear when people have money and power.
