Udupi: International Day against Drug Abuse week inaugurated

Udupi, Jun 26: International Day against Drug Abuse week programme was inaugurated on Wednesday, June 26 at Ravindra Mantapa, MGM College in the city.

Nalini Pradeep Rao, president, taluk panchayat Udupi said, “Children will get addicted to bad habits giving excuses like personal problem, tension, love failure etc. Around 1/3 of minors have lost lives in drink and drive accidents. As many as 25% of the youngsters are committing suicide due to drug abuse. One should have concern over his or her own health. Most of the rapes are happening because of alcohol.” Nalini gave a call to the students to join hands with the work of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in protecting the stability of society and nation.



Speaking on the occasion, ADC Vidya Kumari said, “College students are in a position of taking right decision. Let us have a certain goal and work hard towards achieving that goal. The culture of purchasing goods (commodities) made youngsters as customers. Young minds must think about what contribution they can give to the society. We should understand our responsibility and role in the society. Let us enjoy today’s student life with having certain goal in life. Do not get attracted towards drug abuse. It is just for the moment. Instead, involve in other activities, which will strengthen your personality.”

Resource person Dr Ravindra Manoli, psychiatrist, assistant professor said, “Drug abuse will decrease our thinking capacity, memory power and skill development. Youths will lose judgment and decision making capacity. Many college students will get addicted because of peer pressure. In these days, the tobacco consumption rate is decreased because of strict regulations of the government. Let youth make themselves engage in fruitful activities to divert their attention.”

As part of the programme, a jatha was held from Board high school to MGM College. District Superintendent of police Nisha James flagged off the procession.

Vinith Rao, researcher, Gandhian studies institution, MGM college, Dr M G Vijay, principal, MGM, B A Khadar Shah, assistant director, public information department Udupi were present.

Rohini K, secretary, Karnataka State Liquor restraint board extended the welcome.
