Former IAAF President to be tried in France

Paris, Jun 24 (IANS): Former International Association of Athletics Federations President Lamine Diack and his son Papa Massata Diack, who allegedly covered up Russian athletes who failed doping tests, are to stand trial in France, sources close to the case told Efe on Monday.

Lamine Diack, 86, faces charges of active and passive corruption money laundering in an organized group, while his son, the former IAAF marketing consultant, is accused of active corruption and money laundering.

Another three people are set to be tried by the Paris correctional court over their alleged involvement in the cover up of the positive results the Russian athletes gave in anti-doping tests, as per an investigation opened in 2015.

In exchange for the alleged cover up, Lamine Diack, who presided over the IAAF between 1999 and 2015, received Russian money to fund political campaigns in Senegal, his home country, French newspaper Le Monde said in May.

The deal would have facilitated negotiations with Russian sponsors ahead of the 2013 World Championships in Athletics held in Moscow.

French justice is competent to investigate this case as part of the funds could have been laundered on French territory, according to Le Monde.

Lamine Diack is also suspected of allowing his son to appropriate IAAF revenues coming from sponsors such as the Russian bank VTB, Le Monde reported.
