Mangaluru: Good rain in coastal region -Thumbay vented dam gate opened

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jun 23: Water has started flowing in river Netravati, the lifeline of the district, and gate number five was opened after many months in order to release the excess water.

In 2018, the district received good rains in the month of April itself and the excess water in the dam was released in the month of May. However, in the current year, due to the scarcity of rain, the district faced acute water shortage in the months of April and May. The river did not have enough water to flow even till June 10. However, as some areas of the river received some rain later, there was some flow of water.

Action is being taken to produce electricity by releasing water from AMR dam at Shambhoor on June 20. The locals opine that, if the water was allowed to flow without holding it in the dam, the rain that the district has received so far would not be sufficient to provide drinking water to the city of Mangaluru.

Meanwhile, coastal areas of the state received good rain on Saturday, June 22. The drizzle that started in the morning in Mangaluru city, continued till last night.

The areas of Bantwal, Mulky, Kaup, Vittal, Kanyana, Ullal, Suratkal, Beltangady, Guruvayanakere, Dharmasthala, Venoor, Naravi, Aladangadi, Katapadi, Kadaba, Puttur, Uppinangady, Punjalakatte, Sullia, Udupi, Manipal, Kundapur, Koteshwar, Beejadi, Gopadi, Padubidri, Siddapur, Kollur, Thekkatte, Beloor, Kumbashi, Korgi, Katapadi, Shirva and Karkala received good rains.

These guys are just giving a running commentary instead of publishing the drastic drop in rainfall as compared to yearly average, and it's severe repercussions for the coming year and taking preventive steps!! The water scarcity situation will become more acute in the years to come while we sit complacently doing nothing, but giving commetaries!

God has been merciful and heard all people's prayers. But at the same time we should all remember that we are all in some way responsible for this water crisis & need to do the needful to save every drop of water in the apartments or houses where we live. to avoid a worse situation next summer.
