New Delhi: Astronomical rise in Indians seeking political asylum in past decade

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi

New Delhi, Jun 21: The number of people who want to leave India for fear of their lives has increased by 996.33% in the past 10 years between 2008 and 2018.

Only, 4,722 Indians wanted to leave India in 2009 as they did not feel safe to live in the country. However, in 2018, as many as 51,769 people have applied for political asylum in foreign countries. This was known by the analysis of the data gathered by the office of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Canada and USA are the most favourite nations among the Indians who are seeking political asylum in the last 10 years. While 1,321 Indians sought political asylum in USA, 1,039 applied for the same in Canada.

The difference of applications of political asylum seekers between US and Canada was just 282 some 10 years ago. However, in 2018, there was a sharp increase in these numbers and the difference rose to 22,967 with 28.489 Indians seeking political asylum in US against only 5,522 for Canada.

According to the data of UNHCR of 2018 pertaining to asylum seekers, after USA and Canada, the preferred counties where Indians would like to seek political asylum are South Africa, Australia, UK, South Korea and Germany.

Seeking political asylum in the above mentioned countries is not surprising but what is concerning is that there are Indians who have sought political asylum in counties like Yemen, Sudan, Burundi, Bosnia etc, which have a long history of war and ethnic unrest.

India is not a popular country among political asylum seekers of rest of the world, though it is the largest democracy in the world. To give a picture on this, in 2018, out of the 35.03 lac political asylum seekers throughout the world, only 0.34% (11,957) sought political asylum in India.

The USA, Germany and Turkey were the most favoured nations among the political seekers throughout the world.

On the other hand, when it comes to South Asia, India has the most number of asylum seekers. In 2018, out of the 11,957 people who sought political asylum in India, 65% were from Afghanistan (7,864) followed by 2,064 from Myanmar and 1,134 from Yemen.

When comparing the data of Indians who want to leave the country for political asylum abroad, with those of the rest of the world who want to settle in India, Indians are 334 percent more than the others.

India already is a home for nearly 1.95 lac refugees as of 2018. In South Asia, Pakistan is home for the most number of refugees with 14.04 lac mostly Afghanis. Bangladesh has 9.06 lac , most of them are Rohingya Muslims from neighbouring Myanmar.

The reason why fewer people prefer India as the destination in political asylum seeking is that India is not a signatory to the 1951 United Nations Conventions on the status of refugees. In addition, it has not signed the 1967 UN protocol on the same also. The two rules clearly define the rights and protection the refugees can avail in the countries where they get the asylum.

India does not have a clearly defined domestic policy on treating the refugees. Most of the time, it is subjective and decided on case to case basis.

In the past few years, India has seen stiff opposition in providing political asylum to refugees, especially Rohingya Muslims.

BJP is openly demanding the repatriation of Rohingya Muslims saying that they are threat to the security of the nation. India handed over seven Rohingya Muslims to Myanmar.

With regards to Indians seeking asylum abroad, Narendra Modi government said in the parliament in 2018 that those who seek political asylum in a foreign government are degrading the Indian system for their personal gains. It also said that India, being a democratic country, provides avenues for everyone to redress their issues lawfully.

This is the easiest way to game the system.
The Africans and Arabs know this.
They set foot in Europe/rich countries and utter the magic words:
"I am seeking asylum in your country. I am escaping persecution in my country"

This magic words will mean the host country has to allow you to stay while they allow your case to proceed.

Meanwhile you have children, do whatever and in 10 years your children are citizens.

    What is there to loose?

    Everyone but Indians know this

The problem with Punjabi Sikhs is that they feel it is not viable anymore for them to be farmers, and till their ancestral land...part of the reason being, the land being divided and sub-divided between the brothers...so they give up their lands to their other brothers and venture westward.. Besides many of the Sikhs who give up their land are not really qualified to get other well paying jobs in Punjab. So they land up in Canada, UK, US and seek political asylum as political refugees based on their supposedly persecution as khalistanis...

Its mostly Punjabis who are illegal migrants ask for political asylum. In US there are big rackets where you pay $8000 to lawers and they will make all false documents which shows that your life is at threat in India.

This astronomical rise in Indian seeking political asylum is just the tip of the iceberg. In Assam alone, 40 lakh citizen's made homeless in their own nation thanks to the politics of NRC. Now a large section of these people is forced to live in concentrated camps any time forced to push in Bangladesh even though the country is not had any diplomatic resolution the situation.
Interestingly among them are retired soldiers, Member of parliaments, civil servants who once served India and some even participated in Kargil war.

Now Amit Shah being made Home Minister of this nation, another Assam can't be ruled out in West Bengal and rest of India.

Those who are seeking asylum are wealthy people who can afford to live in a new country. But not every Indian is lucky such as people affected by communal riots and natural disaster who lost everything of their hard earning regardless of their caste and creed.

The aspirations of Hindu Rashtra for the politics of vote bank disturbing demography on religious line is a big disaster in waiting.

There are many people who just want to take advantage of assylum. Their only goal is to stay in the affluent countries like USA, Canada. Can't blame them completely, they go to these countries on various visas (Student, visit, work etc) and get used to the life style there. People don't have to fight for the BASIC needs in these countries as we do in India. People don't need to worry about pot holes while driving, there is no littering, People are disciplined, there is no lane cutting etc etc. In India, just go to a shop or any office, people dint follow lane system, even getting into public transportation is a nightmare. People don't know how to drive, how many cities have proper footpaths? even if they have, how many foot paths are walkable? The fighting for BASIC NEEDS on daily basis makes people look into other countries where they don't have to fight for it. And of course job, money are other factors.

People who migrate to other country for job or residency are not political asylum seekers. There is a separate application form to be filled for getting political asylum and those who go by that way, are called refugees, coming under United Nations convention. People who migrate or seek job are responsible for their accommodation and other things themselves, whereas, for political asylum seekers, the host country, takes care of their stay and food until they are well settled. Canada at present gives, in addition to stay, $ 10 for breakfast, $ 20 each for lunch and dinner. For a family of 4, they get refugee allowance of Canadian $ 6000 (about 3.3 lakh rupees) per month. ($ 50 x 30 days x 4 people). While in Canada on visitor visa, this information, I got from a political refugee, an Indian came from Uganda.

Not really....Uruguay, Peru, Chile, Panama, Argentina and to certain extent Brasil still attract potential immigrants ...only drawback is knowing Spanish in these countries, or Portuguese in Brazil. Check the growing no. of North Indians settled in Uruguay and Argentina because of their European influence..
    Rest are all banana republics

Educated Indians, send their children for higher studies, in the belief that they will get a better quality of life... these families are not persecuted, they believe that their home country does not offer opportunities for development n growth ... Take a hard look at all the CEO of multinational companies in the world... Are they persecuted ?? Certainly not !!!! The other category comes from the less educated, socially and economically, they believe that they are being denied growth, feel threatened and victimized, for various reasons.... They should realise that only skilled, talented, are welcomed in developed nations .....

If you even go to gulf, you will come to know there is a hell and heaven difference in cleanliness, hygiene, law and order and general administration.
Open your eyes and google or go to you tube and check.
Indians who get citizenship of US or any western country will never ever come to India for good. There are very few, who actually have worked in extremely pressurized IT industry environment, who have come back to India because of work pressure and taken up agriculture.

We need to check the break up of different religions of these asylum seekers . Are they only minorities or there are Hindus also seeking asylum? What are the reasons they don't want to live in India? What is their social class.. wealthy or middle class? Is it brain drain or wealth drain?
