Mangaluru: Rainfall intensifies - Red alert sounded for June 22

Mangaluru, Jun 21: As per prediction based on low pressure area created over the Bay of Bengal and advancing monsoon winds, the meteorological department has predicted heavy rainfall during the next three days. The department has declared 'Orange Alert' on June 21 and the maximum 'Red Alert' meaning very heavy rains on Saturday June 22 in Kerala, Karnataka and Goa coasts. For Sunday, 'Orange Alert' has been issued.

The entire coastline of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts experienced good rainfall on Thursday with cloudy weather taking over when the rain took a break.

Sea erosion has continued to affect the people. Houses belonging to Mohammed and his sister, Nafisa at Uppala Moosody are facing danger from the turbulent sea. The family members have been shifted to safer places. 28 coconut trees belonging to them have already been uprooted by surging waves.

A house near Kuntikan, Neerchalu, suffered damages on Wednesday night due to lightning.

During the 24 hours ended 8.30 am on Thursday, Shirali in Uttara Kannada district received 16 cm rainfall, which was the highest for the day in the state. Most places in the coast got between 7 and 10 cm rainfall that day. The department has predicted rainfall almost in the entire coast and several places in south interior Karnataka and north interior Karnataka. This prediction is valid till Saturday morning.

    This red alert signal is not a good sign for the people living in coastal areas as many there will be heavy rains with gusty winds. There is going to soil erosion which will destroy many and many trees will be uprooted. It is sad but it is nature which nobody can go against it. Prevention is better than cure.
