Mangaluru, Jun 18: The course inauguration and orientation programme of the 13th batch of Bachelor of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology at Father Muller College of Speech and Hearing (FMCOSH) was held on Monday, June 17. The programme commenced with the prayer song led by students of BASLP and welcome address by the Principal Prof Akhilesh P M. Thereafter, the principal introduced the chief guest Dr Francis N P Monteiro, associate dean & professor & HOD of Forensic Medicine, A J Institute of Research & Medical Sciences, Mangaluru to the gathering.
After inaugurating the programme by lighting the lamp, Dr Francis Monteiro delivered the inaugural address. In the address, he congratulated the students for getting admission in this century old tradition Institutions which has its motto `Heal and Comfort’. He added, “As students, you are here to learn for yourself and by yourself. The faculty will assist, guide and mentor you. The parents cannot rest after obtaining admission. You need to keep monitoring and encourage your ward.” He wished well for the students in his concluding words and also thanked the management for inviting him as a chief guest.
In his presidential address Fr Richard A Coelho, the director of FMCI congratulated the parents for encouraging their wards in choosing this profession and this institution. He told the gathering to acknowledge their blessedness because of their intact senses and therefore to be considerate to those who lack it. He said that we need to show compassion and empathy for the less privileged and the differently abled. He encouraged the students to make the best use of the library and other facilities available on the campus. He also emphasized on learning from everyone young and old patients, as they are their teachers. He also emphasised on the evil effects of social media and told the students not to be the slaves of their cell phone but rather to use it for their needs. Speech and Hearing are the 2 pillars of human communication. The course BASLP to be considered by students not only as their profession but as their vocation and mission. It is God who inspired them to take up this course. So like Jesus, we need to show empathy to the differently abled and help them to live a normal life. The college has all the infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities. Soon FMCOSH will also get permission to start post- graduation in Speech and Hearing (MSc Audiology and MSc Speech Language Pathology). Only RCI Inspection is awaited. Finally, he wished the students a smooth journey in Father Muller Family to be moulded into
confident and competent professionals.
The formal function was concluded by vote of thanks given by Sr Cynthia Santhumayor, assistant professor, FMCOSH. The program came to an end with the institutional anthem.
On the stage Fr Rudolph Ravi D’Sa, administrator, FMMCH and Fr Ajith B Menezes, administrator, FMMC were present. Fr Nelson Dheeraj Pai, assistant administrator of the Hospital, chaplain Fr Felix Monteiro and MC and advisory committee members were present.
In the second half of the programme, a documentary about the institution was screened to the gathering so that the entrants and their parents are familiarised with the institution and its growth. Later, the freshers had to introduce themselves and the principal handed over to them a copy of syllabus and senior students welcomed the new students with a rose.
Director Fr Richard A Coelho briefed the new entrants on the general rules and regulations of the institution. Principal Prof Akhilesh P M, Dr Aju Abraham and Sr Cynthia, assistant professors orientated the parents and entrants regarding the course and general departmental rules. Fr George highlighted the campus spiritual life. Prof Akhilesh P M gave the concluding remarks. With national anthem, the programme of inauguration and orientation concluded.
