Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jun 15: The meteorological department has informed that the monsoon has entered coastal Karnataka and will strengthen in a few days’ time. According to the norm, monsoon enters Kerala on June 1 and hits the coastal Karnataka region in a day or two after entering Kerala. This time around, the monsoon started on June 9 in Kerala but got delayed by a week in entering the coast due to the 'Vayu' cyclone.

The pre-monsoon rains were very scanty this time around in the coast. In the district of Dakshina Kannada only 77.6 mm rain was received against the usual 227.1 mm, which means a deficit of 66%. In the district of Udupi, only 14.4 mm pre-monsoon rains were received against the normal 227.3 mm, a huge shortfall of 94%. In Kodagu district, the pre-monsoon rain deficit is estimated at 48% against the normal.

The monsoon will be good this year in South India. This part of the country will receive 93% of rains. The monsoon was good in the district of Dakshina Kannada in 2018. The total rains that was received from June 1 to September 30 of 2018 was 3,551 mm, which was 3% more than normal. In the district of Udupi, the rains were 7% less in 2018, though it received rain of 3,784 mm.

The coast had some respite on Friday, June 14, from the rain that was lashing since two days. In the city of Mangaluru, intermittent rains were received on Friday, while Manipal, Kundapur, Kumbashi, Karkala, Padubidri, Kaup, Kollur and Koteshwar of Udupi district received moderate rains.

Hope water harvesting and recharging of wells & borewells is also done to prevent water crisis next summer. We are blessed with enough rains during the monsoon to tide through the summer.
If all the people get together and do it....it will be great.

We need the rains very badly but I would advice citizens to consume the rain water at the minimum as nobody knows what is in store in the next coming days.

I liked your mind-blowing comment but meteorological department will not like it as their prediction is unpredictable most of the time. I don't know the reason.
