Mangaluru, May 20: A progressive farmer, Rukkayya Moolya (96) from Pavanje near Haleangady, died after he was knocked down by a car on Sunday May 19. The accident happened on national highway 66 at Haleangady.

Moolya was crossing the highway in front of his house, when a car that was moving at high speed hit him hard. Rukkayya, who fell to the ground, was immediately taken to a private hospital located at nearby Mukka. The doctors said that he responded well to medications but suffered severe heart attack and breathed his last.

Rukkayya Moolya is survived by wife, four sons, and three daughters. A case about this accidental death was registered in the city (north) police station.

Rukkayya was a farmer to the core. He could not skip daily visits to his agricultural fields situated by the side of national highway regularly and he had made it a point to walk to his field everyday without fail. He was a popular progressive farmer, and had been felicitated and honoured by many local and international organizations. Even at this advanced age, his interest in farming had not waned. He lived a disciplined life.

For those people who drive. Please show some respect for the pedestrians crossing the roads. Especially for Children, women and senior Citizens. Please stop your car if they are attempting to cross the road and allow them to pass.

EVERYWHERE SENIOR CITIZENS GIVEN CONCESSION, HELP AND CARE.

IN THE ACCIDENT CASE TOO IF THE SENIOR CITIZEN INJURES OR DIES SEVERE PUNISHMENT SHOULD BE ANNOUNCED. THEN ONLY OUR SENIOR CITIZENS CAN MOVE WITHOUT FEAR. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST CASE. ALL ARE CARELESS ABOUT SENIOR CITIZENS.

Sad. But at the same time, this particular place is a dangerous place where most of the vehicles are at high speed due to the straight road available. Difficult to judge whose mistake. Unfortunately, we don't have dedicated pedestrian crossing at all the junctions with some measures to slow the vehicle.

I used see this person most of the time when I pass Haleangady. He was weak and used to cross the highway very slowly and I used to wonder nothing will happen to him. Some of his family members would have taken care of him to cross the highway. may his soul rest in peace.
